Three day migraine

I usually have silent migraines (an aura but no headache), maybe a few a month, sometimes months without any. Triggers seem to be lack of sleep and/or too much caffeine. Maybe once a year or so I will get a headache migraine.

However I am now three days into the worst headache I've ever had in my life. Started off pretty normally with an aura that developed into a low headache and a general sense of discombobulation. It lasted all day completely wiped me out. Put it down to being my annual "big one".

However it is still here three days later! I feel dizzy and sick, head is throbbing. Never had anything like it.

How the hell do people manage migraines like this? I'm neither use nor ornament! I've only taken paracetamol which does take the edge off a bit, but have never really had to take migraine meds before.

Any guidance on how to manage it would be welcome. Is 3 days normal???

Actually I should clarify its not a bad headache that's the issue, its really not that bad at all. It's the nausea and...indont know what...sense of something not being quite right in my brain. I've had it once before with a migraine so I don't think it's a TIA or anything more serious

I have anti nausea tablets
Cyclizine or ondansetron
My migraines are mostly aura ones

When vertigo is the major issue I take stemetil instead
I find an ice roller on the base of my neck helpful

That's interesting re the meds as I used both of those when I had hyperemesis during pregnancy. I'd love some ondansetron right now!

I used to suffer 3 day migraines each month. Nothing over the counter helped. My GP started me on one of the triptan melt on your tongue meds and these really helped me. I no longer have periods so migraines have thankfully gone away, but there are many drugs now available for migraines you just have to find the right one for you.

One method I tried and worked for me was a warm bath with a cold cloth on my neck and another on my forehead.
It sounds horrible, hope you recover soon.

Paracetamol isn't recommended for migraine.

You need a triptan and some anti sickness meds. You can but both over the counter at a pharmacy if you can't see your GP.

Try warmth or cold on your head & neck - different things work for different people.
Avoid any foods high in tyramine, also caffeine, MSG, artificial sweeteners or nitrates. Beans aren’t on the link below, except for soy, but I react to them as well, even lentils. Also, tropical fruits, bananas are especially bad for this.

Check any pain medications to ensure they do not work as a vasoconstrictor, as this can trigger or worsen a migraine.

I get a lot of migraines as you can probably guess. If you’re an infrequent sufferer you may be able to get away with avoiding trigger foods just during an attack.

When you’re feeling better I’d do a bit of research so you’re prepared in case you get another bad attack. Hopefully you won’t.

Thanks everyone. Day 4 and it is still here.

Saw GP today who advised strong dose aspirin and metclopromide for the nausea. I have a coil in so Don tend to get a monthly cycle, but she is going to check bloods/hormone levels just on case.

I think the cold on back of the neck would really help.

I've had metaclopramide before, it's quite good. Aspirin can be good too, make sure you take it roughly the same time as the metaclopramide (or food) as it can make you a bit nauseous on an empty stomach.

Hope you feel better really soon OP.
