Hi Sunshine ? neutropinia, as I understood it from when DS was diagnosed, is not a total lack of white cells just the neutorphils?.. protect against upper repertory infections.
My DS, born 6 wks prem was diagnosed with this condition during his stint in SCBU.
He?d had a couple of apnoea episodes so was given a full MOT (including Lumbar puncture ? nothing found except the lack of neutrophiles.
It just so happened that the consultant DS was under had a particular interest in this field and was the only reason why DS was checked for it?.
Turns out it was due to me having a very rare blood disorder/condition ? Granulocite specific antibodies?. apparently they can cross the placenta and killed DS?s ?was told that he would grow his own within 6 weeks?.blood tests every 3 months ? no change?.at 14months they realised that this might be because I was breastfeeding. Stopped that and 3 months later his count was starting to return to normal levels?been fine ever since.
The only thing I was told to watch for were chest infections ? would have to be hospitalised and the infection treat aggressively with AB?s should he get one ? fortunately it never came to that.

Hope you find out what?s causing your DD?s problem and get it sorted soon.

Thanks for that. Did you mix normaly with others or did you keep ds away from people? I am getting very mixed messages from doctors about what I should do - not easy not to mix as I also have a 3.5 ds.

I didn?t deliberately keep him away from people per se?just a tad cautious with people how had obvious chesty colds?but saying that, he was in full time nursery care at 9 months and got everything going but nothing big enough to mean he had to be hospitalised ? just got loads of Penicillin from about 9-15 months.
He is now 5.5 and seems to have quite a robust immune system ? still gets loads of things ? had Scarlet fever this time last year, then Chicken Pox earlier this year - both mild cases ? seems to shakes things off quite easily though.

What lead to your DD?s diagnosis of this?

She was hospitalised with a very bad chest infection which didn't clear up with antibiotics got various other infections and had neutrophills of 0.1 so our local hospital sent her to Addenbrookes fearing she had lukemia. She has been tested for everyting going and all fine except for neutrophills we are currently having 2 blood tests a week and last count was 0.8.

Sounds bad ? exactly what I feared would happen with DS.
Her count seems to be going in the right direction though which is a good sign that her bone marrow is working.
Here?s hoping this is a one off blip and she?ll soon have a super immune system.

Sunshine, must be very worrying - is it similar or the same as being neutropenic? My mum was this when very poorly after chemo.

I would mix but let people know the situation so they don't knowingly infect your dd. Unfortunately not all contagious things are obvious whilst contagious so it will be a bit of a gamble. Could you try to up her immunity by giving supplements like echinacea? Might be worth consulting a homeopathic doctor too.

Bonemarrow isn't exactly working been tested twice and each time looked toxic if no more improvement in count in the next few weeks they are going to test it again. Just wish they could tell me a time span but have been told to expect she could be like this for life

oh dear ? Must be very worrying ? I know I was worried at the time but at least I had an explanation for it and an expectation of a rapid and full recovery.

Seems DS got away lightly with his.
Once his count was almost 1.0 he was discharged from the hospital and so far no further complications.
Hoping for a full and speedy recovery for your DD.
Wish I could have been more helpful for you.
