Glandular Fever

Hi, my daughter has been ill for over two weeks now. Hospital diagnosed glandular fever and pneumonia - she had anti biotics for the latter which she has now finished. She's barely eating, exhausted and sleeping all the time, really sore throat. She's also being sick on and off. Can't get a doctor's appointment locally at all. Really worried about her - she's 18. Just wanted to know whether all of this is normal really?

My daughter had glandular fever when she was 15 although the doctors misdiagnosed and told us it was tonsilitis. She was really ill similar to how you describe for more than 2 weeks . There are complications to glandular fever so I would get medical advice if you are concerned. My daughter went on to develop chronic fatigue and was out of school for 18months. The consultant said it is vital after glandular fever to rest rest and more rest . Because the gp had diagnosed tonsilitis as soon as my daughter seemed better she was back into full time school , exams , stress etc . If she had been diagnosed properly we would have treated it all differently. In the past people with glandular fever were made to rest for 6 weeks or more.
I guess what im trying to say is get medical advice now if you have concerned but be aware that even when she seems better that rest and not going back to school /uni / work etc before she fully ready is important. I hope she feels better soon,

I had glandular fever as a teenager. I spent a week in hospital and was off school for four months.

Thanks for your reply. My daughter was mis-diagnosed at first as well. Feel so helpless as I can't do anything. Hospital advised to follow up with GP to check liver.

I think it's pretty common. I had glandular fever when I was 17 and was ill for about 3 weeks, and was still pretty run-down for a while after that. I didn't have sickness with it though, just swollen glands, awful blistered sore throat and general weakness and exhaustion. Just walking up the stairs tired me out!

I had glandular fever when I was 19 that was misdiagnosed as tonsillitis. My immune system messed up and started attacking my red blood cells. I ended up in hospital for a month looking like a Simpson as my liver was failing and had to have three blood transfusions and be on 6 times the advised dose of steroids for a year.

It's normal. I was ten weeks in bed when I had it last year. Rest. Decent food.

It can really linger in afraid. My brother had it in his teens. He was not himself for a hood six months. Hi he GP recommended a high dose of Vitamin C. The strongest you can get over the counter. Hope she feels better soon.
