POST-menstrual tension/depression - wierd or what?

For about the past 4 months I haven't experienced the usual pmt but about three days of what I can only describe as being in a deep black hole/total lack of energy immediately AFTER my menstrual period. Then a 'light' switches back on and I'm back to my usual self.

Has anyone else had this or any idea of what it could be?

I'm posting under 'health' instead of 'depression' because it's so obviously hormone related.

Does this happen as you get older for example?

Thanks ....

or perhaps I'm just a medical oddity ...

probably worth seeing your gp. i get the more traditional pmt and struggled on for years but got some 'pills' from the gp and it has helped loads, the black hole still beckons for a few days but i generally cope better.

my depression is hormone related but it doesn't make it any less depressionglike. good luck and take care.

Thanks GoatofBitterness (FANTASTIC name btw!)

Good to know the pills helped you. Do you mind me asking if they were ads??

Just asking because I'd be uncertain about taking them (a) because I'm still trying to get pregnant - despite being fairly ancient!! and (b) not sure I'd want to deal with side-effects when I'm only depressed three or so days a month (even though it feels really awful at the time) or perhaps the overall benefit outweighs all of that??

they are ads and i am also ttc. they are a fairly low dose fluoxetine (prozac). i felt really anti taking any ads but then i just got tired of fighting the black hole. only been on them a few months and am by no means cured but they are crutch. go and see your gp, make a double appointment so you can really discuss the situation. you may thinkit is only a few days of the month but i have found generally i am coping better the rest of the month (anxiety etc). you may not need anything but i think awknowledging my feelings to a gp really helped.

hello, I to get very hormonal and at one point thought I was a manic depressive, after many visits to my gp and being offered anti depressents (which I didn't take because it's hormonal)I headed to the Homeopath and have had brillant results. Still get the odd very wobbley day but can see through it now.

The more people I talk to the more common it seems to be, if that helps.

Know Homeopathy not for everyone( i took convincing)knowing the triggers that compound it help to, tiredness, low blood sugar, alchol.

oh did find fab website too, called naps reassured me that i was very normal even if i didn't feel it!!!!!

Thank you for the advice Goatofbitterness - v .much appreciated and v. helpful - will definitely go to GP as I do get anxiety problems from time to time (although they were worse just after dd's birth - much better now)

Will look in to alternative treatments too WinkyWonkyW - thank you - I do need to watch those triggers (especially getting enough sleep) and will look at website - thxs again
