7.5mo DS has a nasty looking rash

It started last night and this morning looks really dramatic, on his face, back of neck, ears, arms and legs, but not on his chest or back.

Took him to rubbishy GP this morning, who said he doesn't know what it is, can we come back later and see him about 5pm to see what it looks like then.

DS doesn't have a temperature, seems fine in himself. He hasn't eaten anything he hasn't had before in the last few days. I was assuming an allergy would be pretty immediate. Doctor doesn't think slapped cheek because it's on his legs and arms.

Any ideas?

TIA

My ds always used to get a rash whenever he got a virus, could it be that?

flowerybeanbag · 03/01/2008 10:41

I don't know - I was thinking if it was a virus or anything he'd have other symptoms, you know, seem ill, temperature, sickness or whatever.

im sorry but why doesnt the doc think it is slapped cheek coz its on his arms and legs? both my dc's have had slapped cheek and both had it on the arms and legs, what does your ds's rash look like?, describe it to me

has he been ill recently? Sometimes viral rashes take a few days or even a couple of weeks to come out.

rantinghousewife · 03/01/2008 10:45

I too thought you could get slapped cheek anywhere on the body.

flowerybeanbag · 03/01/2008 10:51

hasn't been ill recently. It's kind of spots, quite big ones, bit bumpy in places, mostly flat.

Don't know why he doesn't think slapped cheek because of it being on arms and legs...

thank you to those who responded earlier.

We went back to the GP at 5 - DS's rash was a bit worse, but he was otherwise fine. GP still didn't know what it was, and suggested we 'wait and see' and 'come back tomorrow'. He couldn't clarify what he wanted to 'wait' for or what he was hoping to 'see'.

So he rang the hospital and then sent us down there to see a paediatrician. DS had a bit of a temperature by then and when the consultant looked at him she was 95% certain it is a viral rash, even though he isn't ill himself, could be his body's reaction to a virus he has come into contact with. She also agreed that it could be slapped cheek although it is not just his face. We are going back tomorrow morning, so hoping he's a bit better but the doctor thought he probably wouldn't be for a bit, more likely to be a couple of days. She mentioned blood tests and possibly steroids to get it down but as he is in no distress I said no, so we are monitoring overnight.

Who'd be a parent eh?!

exactly, who'd be a parent? I'm glad you actually got to see a good doctor. Hope he gets better soon!

rantinghousewife · 04/01/2008 18:26

Ah glad the doc had another look and got to see a paedatrician, IIRC, ds always got a rash before he got ill. Hope your ds is feeling better today.

flowerybeanbag · 04/01/2008 18:32

thanks . He was actually a bit worse this morning, rash had spread a bit, so we ended up being in the hospital most of the day, having blood tests etc. All was clear though and he is home again, looking a bit better this evening.
