The Great Cough of 2007

Okay so who else has it? Have been coughing for two weeks now and felt terrible all Christmas. Went to a New Years Eve party and half the people there had it. I feel really washed out, run down and tired. DH is also getting fed up of being kept awake by my coughing! Have not been to docs as they usually tell me it is viral and not worth giving antibiotics but I am now starting to wonder if they would be worth a visit. Also have sinusitis. This is not fun! Anyone else suffering?

We all had it in the run up to Christmas. DD still has remnants of it. Never coughed so much in all my life!! You have my sympathies, it does go on and on and on, but it does eventually get better, honestly! Didn't use antibiotics in my case but friend did owing to secondary infection. Hope you feel stronger soon!

TigerFeet · 03/01/2008 11:18

I had it in November. I have never felt so ill. I couldn't breathe properly and ended up having chest xrays done and was threatened with hospital. Total of 3 weeks off work . Still tire very easily a month on.

Much sympathy to anyone who had it over Christmas

wheresthehamster · 03/01/2008 11:30

Had mine 4 weeks and lost a stone (yesssssssss!!). Eventually went to the docs yesterday and have some antibiotics with a chest xray to follow if it and the associated symtoms don't go.
Have never felt so ill and really thought I might have something seriously wrong.

throckenholt · 03/01/2008 11:34

ds has had a cough since about the 10th of December - other dcs h ave had it on and off and we have all had a fluey fevery thing over christmas.

aelita · 03/01/2008 11:41

I've had it for about 3 weeks now - DD had it 3 months! She's had 2 lots of antibiotics & is due a check up next week. I hope she won't need another lot. It's hideous. Every day I hope all this gunk will have gone, but there I am still spluttering. The news has been full of Norovirus talk, but I've seen no mention of the cough...

chiefcookandbottlewasher · 03/01/2008 11:41

It arrived for me the Sunday before Christmas, I promptly shared it with my husband (rude not to, I thought?) and we both spent the festive period alternating between bed and sofa, keeping each other awake at night with mega-snoring, coughing and constant nose-blowing! In spite of the fact that I am 38 weeks pregnant and could only take paracetamol, my husband - full of various pharmaceutical remedies - obviously suffered far more than i did. Just glad i didn't go into labour with limited ability to breathe!!

ChristmasPresence · 03/01/2008 17:10

I have it now - glad I've found this thread as I was starting to think i had something serious too! i feel completely wiped out - luckily dp has been at home, so have been able to rest. mind you, if he hadn't been here i think the kids would have had to look after themselves cos i just couldn't get out of bed on tuesday. I honestly can't remember the last time that happened. hope everyone is feeling better now. DS has just started coughing so i suspect he's next in line for it.... happy new year everyone

DaphneHarvey · 03/01/2008 18:26

My DS (4.3) started with it on 21st December. He coughed constantly for about a week. High temp to begin with as well. He's still coughing now. I think coughs are incredibly hard to shake off sometimes. Weirdly, although he's not bunged up with snot, I found Vicks rub on the chest seemed to help. He's only got me up once in the night in all that stretch. Bless him.

Of course, as emetophobe, I have been on high alert for vomiting since 21st Dec. Nerves frayed.

wooga · 03/01/2008 19:32

My ds has had it a few weeks now,i've also got it and dd.
And looks as if we gave it to my parents at christmas as they've both got coughs keeping them up at night.
It's the aching which accompanies it that i hate the most-just want to stay in bed but unable to with the dcs on my own!
Chemist i saw says it can last for a long time.

I was just about to ask for some advice for my ten year old dd but I think this must be what she has. She has a constant cough, really high temperature and complains about back and chest pain. We have been to the doctors twice they wont give her anything and said it might take three weeks to go. Entrance exams for new school coming up next week arrggh.

Any advice for those whose children have had it. Did their children just sleep constantly the whole time. I am really worried as she just doesnt seem to get any better, every day is the same and she looks awful. Any advice much appreciated, thanks

discoverlife · 03/01/2008 20:17

Had it for 6 weeks. I have finally got rid of it enough not to have to worry about my weak pelvic floor muscles.

my daughter has not been sick at all tho so it cant be Norovirus can it?

Sexonlegs · 03/01/2008 20:26

We have had it here too. Horrendous. Started with sickness and the runs for our 2 dd's and then closely followed by horrid chesty cough, high temperature, lack of appetite and feeling completely wiped out. I have been like it for 2 weeks so far. Am feeling better, but slow progress.

Hope everyone feels better soon.

Just hoping to God we don't get the Norvovirus (sp?). I do not do sick - go into a complete meltdown!!

wheresthehamster · 03/01/2008 22:15

It's just been on the news. 100,000 catching it every week. Hospitals closing wards to limit the infection. Recommendations are to stay in, drink plenty of water and don't go to the docs

I had the flu jab this yr after really bad asthma lastyr.

Could this be why i am fine so far this yr.Is this the flu everyone has?

McDreamy · 03/01/2008 22:44

We've all got it here in Cyprus after a wek back in the UK over Xmas. My poor dad ended up in hospital yesterday with it after his oxygen saturations dropped . Even the paramdics said he looked really rough. He is back home now feeling much better.

McDreamy · 03/01/2008 22:45

We've all got the cold not the d&v bug.

mrsmalumbas is the gunk coming out of your nose bright green or clear ? if its bright green then it could well be a secondary bacterial infection , your body will eventually fight it off but a course of antibiotics would do the job faster! I too have the dreaded cough and have had for the last 2 weeks , one of the doctors i know said that there is a cough/cold going around that is lasting up to six weeks !!!!!

ratclare · 04/01/2008 08:17

If you go to your gps hope that the waiting room isnt full of numpties who have norovirus !!!

dizzydo · 04/01/2008 08:20

re the Great Cough has anyone found anything, homeopathic or otherwise that eases the cough. My DD has coughed the whole night long and is still at it, its just constant.

emandjules · 04/01/2008 09:35

my dd has a really wet sounding cough - very loose. Either it is on its way out or she has an infection. No temp and well in herself at mo.
