Dd1 who is 17 arrived back home at 10pm last night from her boyfriends. She shut her finger in the car door and came running into the house. To cut a long story short she ended up having a epileptic fit and being rushed to hospital with blue lights flashing.Lucky for her she can't remember anything til about 11pm.Lots of tests have been done, bloods, water, and chest xray. They kept her in last night,i stopped till 4am this morning and feel really bad now leaving her.Just rang and was told visiting isn't till 4 this afternoon, but can pop up with some things because she hasn't even got any pjs with her.
Doc said she can't drive now until she has the all clear from doc's,it may be a year or more.
How can she just have epileptic fits at 17yrs old with nothing before? My dd2 14yrs is under birmingham's children hospital because of poss epileptic fits and now this.Do you think there is some link to them both?Does it even run in families like that?

How scary for you madmommy.

I had a friend who had a fit once - he hadn;t had one before, or one since (8 years ago) I(6t could be isolated (I'm no expert though)

What did the doctors say about the cause?

madmommy6 · 03/01/2008 09:48

They are unsure of the cause, they said it may not have anything to do with shutting her finger in the car door,or the shock could have caursed it.They really don't know.
I'm just getting her things sorted and then popping up to her.

well, I hoipe she's OK

Let us know how she gets on.

Also, hope she's out of hospital soon.

jalopy · 03/01/2008 14:44

Was it a full blown fit? I only ask because sometimes fainting can be very dramatic. Is that likely?

moljam · 03/01/2008 14:46

omg!hope alls ok?must have been really scaring for all of you.

TellusMater · 03/01/2008 14:47

My mum developed epilepsy when she was 40-odd. So it can appear out of nowhere.

Hope she (and you) get some answers soon.

edam · 03/01/2008 14:48

Hey Mad, sorry to hear about this, must have been very frightening. One fit does not = epilepsy (small children often have seizures when they have a high temperature, for instance) so hopefully dd will be fine. Epilepsy is only diagnosed after several seizures, as you probably know wrt dd2.

Epilepsy can happen out of the blue - I developed it at 29 having no family history at all. But I hope dd's is just a one-off.

scatterbrain · 03/01/2008 14:50

Sounds realy scarey ! Hope she is feeling better now ?

My cousin developed epilepsy at 27 after being caught up in the London tube bombs - had her first fit as she came out of the station - had another three before diagnosis and is now on meds and hasn't had another - touch wood. Her doc said it was the shock that brought it on - but that she must have had it already - although never had a fit before. Shutting your finger ina car door is bloody painful - I would think could also induce shock.

madmommy6 · 03/01/2008 16:52

Thanks all.Dd is now back home with a appointment for a eeg tomorrow at The City Hospital.
She has a very sore finger and head.(she banged her head when she fell fitting),but other wise she is fine.
It looks very likely that it was a epileptic fit.She fell with arms, legs and body shaking. Her eyes had rolled right up and she was gritting her teeth. It took about 40 mins to come round and said can't remember anything about at all.Hopefully it will be a one off, time will tell.

scatterbrain i hope your cousin is coping, what a horrorable thing to go through.
I was in the post office 6 yrs ago when it was armed raided.I still think about it now and don't do bangs i jump a mile. It's not nice having a gun pointed at you and hearing it fire.So i know its hard to get over these kind of things.

I don't live a quiet life do i.lol

hope you dd is okay

madmommy6 · 11/01/2008 09:46

2littledds thank you for asking about dd.
She is fine in herself now thanks.Took her to gps yesterday because she said she was feeling dizzy the day before.Gp wasn't worried about that at all,but he said he was going to check that the hospital had refered her for a brain scan.He said we would get a appointment through the post and he was pleased she had already had a EEG done.So all i can do now is wait.Dd isn't at all worried, she is going to college has normal and to her boyfriends house. It's just me thats worrying. She might be 17 but she is still my baby.lol
Now do i google brain scans or has somebody on here any experiance.I worried myself silly yesterday about the dizzyness.

foxinsocks · 11/01/2008 09:49

my advice would be don't google it .

Think of it as a precaution. I had a brain scan at about her age because I had such powerful travel sickness and dizziness, they just wanted to be 100% sure it wasn't something sinister but they also said it was useful because they could rule a whole load of things out and focus on other causes so perhaps think of it like that.

I'm glad she's being seen so soon. What a shock it must have been for you.

madmommy6 · 11/01/2008 09:59

I know i shouldn't google it,but hard not to when i'm sat here with just ds who is 2,so blissfully unaware of how worried i am.When i'm being sensible i know all the test are just to make sure she gets the right treatment if she needs any.But at the back of my mind i have a little voice saying what if.

foxinsocks · 11/01/2008 10:03

that's the joy of being a mum isn't it!

It's perfectly normal to think like that I reckon. Do you know how long you have to wait for her to have the scan?

I like the way she is just getting on with it! I think, at her age, you still think you are invincible!

littlerach · 11/01/2008 10:08

I had a nepilieptic fit when I was 20, in a nightclub, and was rushed ot A&E.
It was tought to have been due ot the strobe lights.

I had tests for epiliepsy after that. and nothing ever showed up, and I have never had anything since.

DON@T google it!

flowerybeanbag · 11/01/2008 10:09

I have epilepsy, was diagnosed at 11. It can run in families apparently, my parents were asked if there was any family history - there isn't but it can be a family thing.

I have had loads of EEGs over the years, plus I had a scan as well when I was diagnosed. It's all a bit scary but it's to make sure they get the right diagnosis so they can sort out the proper treatment for her.

Try not to worry if you can. Now I am a parent I can understand why my parents were so worried at the time, I had a few fits before diagnosis and looking back they must have been terrifying for my parents but I wasn't particularly worried I don't think.

My fits are stress-induced, that can often be what brings them on, sometimes other triggers as well. The EEG will help identify what triggers your daughter has if any - she will probably have had to breathe heavily as if out of breath for a bit, have lights flashed, etc, to monitor her brain's reaction.

I had the scan as well as I said, but in my case nothing showed at all - only on the EEG. I am on medication, have been since I was about 13 or 14, not til I'd had quite a few fits, and I function as a normal person.

I'm sure she will be fine and if it is epilepsy, will cope brilliantly.
