Fatty foods make me ill(TMI)

Hi, just wondered if anyone has any advice? I have spent the last hour or so I'm the bathroom because last night I had 2 mini pizzas and I think it's the fat that is making me ill, my body reacts like this a lot, I get cramping, reflux and diarrhoea, the cramping and diarrhoea are usually the worst and I can sometimes go up to 12 times in an hour, but occasionally I'll be sick with the reflux too. It's just becoming a miserable way to live and our oven is currently broken so I'm just eating what I can right now. I know the easy answer is to eat very little fat but I would like to know why my body acts like this.

Gallbladder?

GeneLovesJezebel · 23/02/2022 07:55

Have you seen a GP ?

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 23/02/2022 08:04

I came on this based on the thread title instantly thinking Gallbladder too.

Do you get pain on your front and back just under your right boob, sometime radiating up to your right shoulder. Hard to get comfortable and tends to hit overnight then ease after a few hours?

PennyDeFuckwit · 23/02/2022 08:07

Gallbladder. Had similar symptoms to you, scan showed a big stone - had it removed 4 years ago, fine ever since. Although I still can't afford to dump too much fatty foods in my stomach in one go.

Do you have a nagging uncomfortable pain or tightening sensation around your ribs sometimes, either central or to the right?

looklikeanelephant · 23/02/2022 08:08

I have contacted my GP before but every time even if I explain the fatty foods thing he always says 'it sounds like gastritis' and won't see me. I don't get much pain around my ribs but I do get a lot around my shoulder on one side, although I know it's unlikely to be related. But yes it only ever lasts a few hours and then it goes but those few hours are incredibly painful.

That sounds a lot like gallbladder issues. Go back to the gp.

GeneLovesJezebel · 23/02/2022 08:10

Contact them again and say you’ve got gallbladder symptoms, that you won’t to be seen.
Say that it’s affecting your ability to work.

GeneLovesJezebel · 23/02/2022 08:11

*want to be seen

Right shoulder as well?

Absolutely gallbladder. I had mine out last month.

I also ignored until the 'episodes' got so bad I ended up in A&E with it.

notthemum · 23/02/2022 09:16

Yep, really think gall bladder. Had mine out a few years ago now, still can't eat too much fat though. Sorry.

Justkeeppedaling · 23/02/2022 09:56

Have you tried cutting down on fatty foods? Does it stop the episodes?

lkjhgfd · 23/02/2022 10:50

Definitely worth pushing for a gallbladder check but also look into coeliac. My only real symptom was exactly the same as you describe when I ate particularly fatty meats. I was only tested because almost all of my entire family (on both sides) is coeliac. Now that I'm gluten free it's much better but really fatty meat can still leave me bathroom bound. I love pork belly but can only eat it if I'm close to home and I have to weigh up whether it's worth it.
It's to do with the damage to your gut making it impossible to process the fat but then once you go gf it rebuilds itself (to an extent depending on the damage done).

JustSmallFry · 23/02/2022 10:54

Gallbladder was what first crossed my mind too. Keep pushing your GP!

Geamhradh · 23/02/2022 15:01

Gallbladder here too
I have stones and sludge and my symptoms were intestinal after eating fatty foods etc.

Fairytoast · 23/02/2022 15:35

Insist on being referred for an ultrasound scan. If that fails there are many private companies offering scans now. We shouldn’t have to pay here in the U.K. but the waiting times in some areas are crazy atm and it’s so hard seeing a GP, my practice still insist on telephone consultations it’s getting ridiculous. I need my upper abdominal area scanned, I have just booked privately as the NHS wait is too long. It’s going to cost me £100 and I can have it done in days. I will send the results to my GP if anything is found.

Ilostit · 23/02/2022 15:37

That’s deffo gallbladder including the referred shoulder pain!!

CovidCurious · 23/02/2022 18:02

If the pain is in your right shoulder then gallbladder is the prime suspect. Push for a GP appointment and ultrasound.

In the meantime cut down on fats as much as you can.

I am waiting for my gallbladder to come out. I have a confirmed diagnosis of gallstones. The doctor said to take Buscopan if I get any cramps in the meantime.

CovidCurious · 23/02/2022 18:04

Also, keep an eye on the colour of your urine. If it is unusually dark and you know you are not dehydrated that is another sign the gallbladder could be involved. If that is the case then it is probably a symptom the GP can't so easily palm off on some other cause.
