Does this sound like an aura headache?

Was feeling fine, watching a movie on phone and suddenly felt like had a “floater” in eye only this “floater got bigger and started flashing. If I closed my eyes it was still there. It was arch shaped and took 10 mins to slowly shrink and disappear into the corner.
About 15 mins later I started getting a mild pressure type headache which never became severe.
I’m 41, have always suffered from bad headaches, sometimes painkillers don’t even touch them. However, I never ever had one with aura. (Which is what I think it is from dr google)
Should I be worried that I’ve suddenly got this at 41? I’m also due to come on my periods which is when I always get more headaches.
Any experiences to calm the anxiety would be really appreciated Flowers

Migraine with aura. This is just how mine start. Usually once I get the floater I can take two paracetamol and drink a massive glass of water and it goes. It’s horrible. If it takes hold and won’t shift then drink, take painkillers and close your eyes for a while.
With me the headache always comes after but I’ve learnt to take the painkillers before it appears.

I have had something similar, but known as an optical migraine....where there is no pain, just a bit funny vision in the form of a ring in one eye. It lasts like 10-20 mins...didnt know what it was. But it sent me into a right panic and my BP shot to 198/154 (crisis level) so I went to emergency. The doctor explained what it was and I had to take BP pills a couple of weeks to lower my BP, but was able to come off and stay off.

Yes, I get these but without a headache (although I always take paracetamol when they come on anyway just in case). They sound exactly like yours. They always leave me feeling a little strange afterwards. I also has one come on whilst driving once (I get no prior warning) but thankfully I was very close to home.

I don't know if it's a concern that you've just started getting them. I got my first in my 30s at work and had no idea what was happening. I'm 44 now and usually have only around three or four a year.

Thanks for sharing your experiences.
I know for definite I had an aura migraine and I’ve suffered from horrible headaches before, but it is the first time I have had the aura and that’s really freaked me out.
I’ve done a lot of googling since and lots of posters seem to have had auras with their migraines since their twenties or teens, I’m 41!

Posted at the same time. Didn’t see your reply. I feel my hormones are all over the place. I’m about to start my periods and always get headaches then, but I feel I maybe peri menopausal too. Such a frightening experience.

That is textbook migraine with aura. Ibuprofen much better than paracetamol.

ExactlyThat · 20/02/2022 09:14

This is what I get although they aura lasts an hour. Headache is mild so I never class it as a classic migraine. I had my first one in my 20’s and have had a lot 5 now, randomly, in 6 years.

ChikaCherryCola · 20/02/2022 09:14

It definitely could be hormonal. It is frightening when it happens. I feel really detached from the world and then have a weird feeling afterwards. My sister gets migraines that put her in bed for full days with pain and sickness. If I have to have them I'd definitely rather these than those!

schnubbins · 20/02/2022 09:30

I had my first Migrane with Aura aged 14 exactly as you have described above they continued regularly over the years with all the symptoms , facial paralysis , vomiting etc until after the birth of my second child 20 years ago .I had Status Migranosis in both pregnancies.Since then I only get sproradic Optic Migraine . No change since menopause or since starting HRT.

I felt really lethargic afterwards. Bizarre because the headache that followed the aura wasn’t even as severe as I’ve experienced before. Was a mild pressure headache.

3 aspirins
Coffee with ibuprofen (if you’re not prone to digestive issues)
Sometimes taking the above as soon as the eye thing starts can help prevent the headache.
Mine started with hormones in teen years and has worsened through peri menopause now too. Sometimes have several in a row for days.

JustBkind · 20/02/2022 17:48

Definitely migraine with aura. I’ve suffered for years with them and they have worsened these last ten years to a point where I was getting 3 or 4 per week. The eye thing is the worst for me, I hate it more than the headache afterwards and I can set my watch on how long it takes to go…30 minutes exactly. Sometimes I get a bad headache over one eye, sometimes a mild headache and occasionally no headache at all. I always feel spaced out for a while after the aura stops, tired and really crave carbs. I usually get another the day after but on the opposite side. They are also hormone related.

I have migraines with aura without pain. The first one, two years ago, scared the hell out of me. My GP said it wasn’t normal and sent me to hospital to check my eyes. Everything was fine, they said I should take paracetamol.
Mines are really bad. Some people just see a spot of light or a zig zag line. I start with the zig zag and soon get colorful waves like water that conoletely cover my sight. I’m literally blind for 40 min. I get them in summer when it is scorching hot and humid. Scary as hell ☹️ I am always worried when I drive or when I go hiking alone because I really lose sight.

Summer makes my migraines worse as well.

Mine are a bit odd as I get auras without headaches and migraine headaches without auras. As well as the shimmering zig zags I also lose patches of vision. If I’m looking ant a computer screen whole words will just be missing.
