ds has had cough and cold for last two days its getting better and he hasnt had a temperature. My mil says i should not give him a bath and i should not give him a bath every night anyway. My mum says as long as flat is warm and he is kept warm he will be ok. He not had bath three days now and i feel he should have one tonight. What do you all think

I'd give him a bath if he likes having a bath, and not if he doesn't. Seriously, it's a bug, what difference does a bath make?

How old is he?

cluckiemama · 02/01/2008 11:16

I don't think it will make much different to his cold if your home and bath are warm. But also it won't harm him not to have a bath in three days! If you feel he needs one tonight then bath him.

I agree with your Mum, and a lovely warm bubbly bath will make him feel cosy and fresh.I think everyone feels much better after a bath when they've felt lousy for a few days and like your Mum says everything in the flat will be warm.

he is two next month. He loves his bath bless him. Mil always says things like that . Says i should bath him twice a week and always keep bathroom door closed as he will get ill from the drafts! Also got some benylin cough and colds but was told by a gp tixylix is better. Now very confused as poor old ds however poorly he is is still running about even though he has

When my daughter has colds I give her two hot-as-she-can-manage baths a day, for at least half an hour, in a well heated bathroom. The hot vapours help to dislodge the snot and make her breathing easier.

The really important thing is to keep your baby inside at a constant temperature and not to go out in the cold.

Maidamess · 02/01/2008 11:28

Sounds like she is spouting that old wives tale that if you get wet, then get cold, you will catch a cold. Which of course is nonsense. Does she always poke her nose in like that?

sleepdeprivationandme · 02/01/2008 11:31

does he have a chest infection? Has he been seen by your GP? Had this many times with ds1, our GP is very good and advised us that some of the over the counter cough medicines are a suppressant, and some times they need to cough to clear the crap up from their chests, otherwise it can just sit and become infected.

As for the bath thing, I leave mine in the bath longer when snotty - close bathroom door - to steam their noses a bit - it seems to help mine when they cant blow their noses properley, and have big warm snuggly towel at the ready for afterwards. Oh and medised is good for bedtime - paracetamol to help with aches and an added thing that I cant remember with helps to dry up the mucus. Also says it helps restful sleep which helps your restful sleep!

yes mil even though she does not live in this country i should not give him really cold drinks or ice cream because he will get an infection or when he wouldnt sleep through the night that even though he was one and bf and never had formula i should give him a bottle and he would sleep through the night! But my all time favourite was when he picked up a gastro bug it was my fault as i let him crawl on a floor. And put things in his mouth! Nothing to do with the fact then that when i was trying to bring his temperature down she told me to give him medicine via his bum so poor thing got the runs and his temp got higher! Never listen to her now. Dh however does
