D&V bug - when do you say enough is enough and take child to GP even if there is nothing they can really do?

Ds2's (17months) current tummy bug started on Sunday and he still has diarheoa (one day I'll spell it right) and is being sick a couple of times a day. When he throws up it is mostly water and/or breastmilk and a couple of bits of undigested food from hours beforehand. He is still having the occasional wet nappy - the one I took off before he went in the bath last night had probably had one small wee.

This is his second tummy bug in just over two weeks and he has had croup in between, so he has hardly eaten since the middle of december and has lost about 2kg.

At the moment he is livelyish - nowhere near his normal self - but he has been lying around a lot.

I'd take him now, to be honest.

FlllightAttendant · 02/01/2008 11:01

Oh poor thing, you must be worried

Can he keep down dioralyte/similar? I'm not sure if he is too little. I would think dehydration is the most serious thing to watch for, but they might suggest having him in hosp for a day or so on a drip? That could really help imo.

Wallace · 02/01/2008 11:01

Thought you might say that, but what can they do?

Also the docs is closed today and he really isn't ill enough for an emergency doc

I would ring and just speak to the out of hours. No harm in that

Wallace · 02/01/2008 11:10

He is perking up since I posted this

He had a couple of little bfs which have stayed down and given him some energy.

I will phone if he gets any worse, but you are right that all they can do is put him on a drip and he is not ill enough for that

He is 17mths old its ok to call the emergency Dr if you are really worried

colditz · 02/01/2008 11:45

If he is getting lethargic, he may be dehydrated, and he may need to be seen - hope he is ok bow though.

Wallace · 02/01/2008 14:32

Thanks, he has been a lot perkier this afternoon. He had a nibble of food at luch and plenty of water and bf and nothing has come back up.

Seems to have turned the corner now [fingers crossed] He seemed quite hungry at supper time, and had quite a few bites of some toast and apple. Everything staying down.

Wallace

We've had this too and my ds2 is also about the same age as yours. We went to the dr on day 5 of the thing as his bum was so runny still and i was given anti nausea and anti diarrhea drugs which have helped alot. I think that's about all tehy can give you, but the diarrolyte rehydration salts are also worth giving.

good luck - its horrid for them - poor wee things

Wallace · 03/01/2008 19:52

He is a lot better, but still isn't weeing much at all. I'm pretty sure he isn't dehydrated anymore, but if his nappy isn't very wet in the morning I will have to take him to the doc

Hi Wallace - I would sit tight until Monday if you are getting wet nappies. However, if you don't I would contact the out of hours service without hesitation.

Unfortunately there is so much of it going around I would avoid the surgery for fear that I would give it to someone who wouldn't have otherwise had it.

Hope he feels better soon!

Wallace · 03/01/2008 20:32

The lack of wet nappies is starting to worry me slightly if I'm honest. IIRC he had one this morning that was a bit damp (maybe one small wee), and maybe one or two that could have been a tiny bit damp but couldn't really tell because of the diarrhoea (I can spell it now!) He is drinking fine and eating a bit. His diarrhoea isn't even that bad, I don't understand where all the liquid is going!

Meant to say that will have to leave it til morning anyway as I am on my own with 3 kids (dh away) He is fast asleep anyway and he has been fine today, a bit grumpy and whingy but not drowsy at all, and enjoying playing with toys.

It will be re-hydrating him. Give it until Morning and see. If he is sick in the night take him to the Drs.

Wallace · 03/01/2008 20:37

Thanks thats what I was thinking about docs in morning. So I won't call yuo over cautious

So it takes a while for all the water to rehydrate the body? That makes sense

OP posts:
Wallace · 04/01/2008 05:51

Hooray! Wet nappy this morning and no poo overnight
