swollen glands and very large tonsils in DD

Hi, my 4 yo DD has had swollen glands in her neck now for some time now, they have been up and down now for the past 4/5 months. I took her to the GP about 3 months ago and he said that it was most likely due to a cold, he also found one in her groin. He said to keep an eye on things and to bring her back if they did'nt go away. She seems to have had a cold on and off for the past few months too, she just starts to get over it and it seems to come back, we've all been the same. I spoke to my HV about it also and she said not to worry that it was quite normal for kids to have swollen glands and that they can last for some time. Anyway as its not in my nature not to worry i took her back to the GP last week, i mentioned to her that my DD's tonsils look very large and that i was concerned about the glands staying swollen for so long. She said that her tonsils are very large and that her adenoids probably are too, i asked her if that could be causing the swollen glands and she said it is possible and that the tonsils should sort themselves out over the years.

I told her that i'd been looking on the net about swollen glands and she said to me that she knew what i was worrying about and that my DD did not have liuekemia or lymphoma, these were exactly the things i'd been worrying about. She said that my DD is very healthy, which certainly seems to be the case as she has endless energy and never sits still for very long. I suffer from PND nd anxiety and have been checking my DD's glands about ten times a day, i asked the GP if i should just stop worrying about it and stop checking the glands all the time and she said yes.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and if i should just accept what the GP says and stop worrying about it.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

hello, my dd (8) has the same problems as your dd, one day they just appeared when he had a nasty fever, he was about 3 at the time, his also come up and down with nasty colds etc, and they are more up than down, he also has very swollen tonsils and probably adenoids aswell, he saw the doc alot when it first kicked off, they measured the largest gland and gave him antibiotics thenmeasured it again in a week to see if it had reacted to the treatment which it had thankfully, (only a small amount though, the swelling was slightly decreased. try not to keep poking the glands as u will make your dd paranoid and u will also irritate the glands. HTH.

thanks for your reply, i know i should just stop worrying and imagining the worst but i do have a lot of anxieties concerning my and my kids health. Its good to hear that there are others with this problem and for it not to be anything serious. I forgot to mention that my DD also has mild exczema and the GP reckons that could cause the glands to swell.

thanks agian.

if you're worried, ask to see a different GP, you are entitled to a different opinion.

KM i understand how u feel, i suffer from severe health anxiety and have recieved lots of CBT for it, i still worry about the glands and every time he comes down with something im convinced its something to do with his glands
