Getting asthma meds when living abroad for up to a year

My DS is moving to Portugal for up to a year soon, as part of his Uni/training course. He is asthmatic and needs monthly meds. Does anyone know how this works as the Uni are being singularly unhelpful. TIA

He will need to see/register with a doctor out there and get them prescribed. They will have similar medications out there. You can take 3 months medication out of the country so he will have plenty of time to organise when he gets there. We do this for people coming from abroad to this country

I don't know what medicine he's on but things like the blue inhaler are over the counter in Portugal (and cheap as chips; like, less than a fiber each).

Looks like he needs to get a student ghic. www.gov.uk/guidance/healthcare-in-portugal-including-madeira

I’d contact the Portuguese uni as presumably they will have experience of dealing with registering with a dr etc

We can buy most pharmaceutical s over the counter so that might be possible?

When you say the University are being unhelpful who is contacting them you or him?

Has he googled the University that he is going to and checked whether there is an on campus medical centre etc? Is there a facebook page etc for International students attending the University etc? Has he looked into the area he will be living in to see what pharmacies/Doctor Clinics are there and contacted them to see of he can buy his meds over the counter (you can in many cases) or asked how he registers with the clinics or if he needs to at all (many in tourists areas have walkin clinics).

Many thanks all. He's not on salbutamol unfortunately and instead a turbohaler (which I think is more expensive). I'll find out if we can purchase OTC.
