Spatone- can I take 2 sachets?

Hi
I’ve got low iron (8 UMOLS) and GP prescribed me iron tablets which I didn’t collect and instead wanted to up my iron intake with diet and spatone.

However, instructions state only take one sachet a day unless you’re pregnant (I’m not) but DH says one sachet will be to maintain your iron....not if you want to up your level and you’re anaemic.

Anyone just take two or will it be too much?
I’ve messaged Spatone yesterday on multiple social media accounts but no reply as yet.

It was extremely easy verbena. The infusion itself only takes around 20 minutes via IV. The whole appointment (which was a consultation, the IV and then a short monitoring period after) was just over an hour. No pain at all, apart from the expected slight discomfort of the IV itself.

I went to Dr Andrew Klein at the Iron Clinic in Cambridge and would definitely recommend him. There are other similar clinics elsewhere I I knew there is one in Harley St in London for example).

Thanks so much cheeseismydownfall (it’s my downfall too heeheee) - I’m only 40 mins from Cambridge so will check that out if my tablets aren’t enough. Wonder if our healthcare would cover it.

Just checked out the website - pretty pricey at about £950 but will check if we’re covered. Says it lasts a year (one infusion).

The total cost is £770 - the consultation is included, its not an extra cost - I think I was a bit confused when I looked! Mine was covered by Bupa. They had to refer it to the authorisation team who wanted to know my feratin and hemoglobin levels. Once I told them what they were they approved treatment without any fuss!

Verbena17 · 18/02/2022 15:48

Aha - I guess they’ve separated the costs for private patients who are funding themselves whereas Bupa cover consult too.
We’re with Bupa so will definitely check if they’ll do it if my iron doesn’t go back up.

Apparently Bupa are the most likely to pay up for iron infusion out of all the main insurers so that's good!

I was advised to take tablets after pregnancy, the side effects were horrible so I ditched the tablets and took two sachets a day of Spatone mixed with orange juice.

When I had my repeat bloods my levels were great and they were saying it showed I'd taken my tablets regularly, they were Shock when I said it was the Spatone.

Lemonademoney · 13/11/2022 16:56

I used spatone when anaemic in pregnancy because iron tablets made me feel so poorly. Midwife was highly sceptical about them and then was subsequently amazed at how quickly my iron levels recovered on them. No side effects either so total win as far as I’m concerned.

I took two sachets daily after birth on the advice of my midwife. It did make me feel better as my iron was low. Longer term it made my teeth a bit discoloured. Nothing that couldn't be fixed by a scale and polish at the dentist, but just to forewarn you.

Verbena17 · 13/11/2022 21:44

Thank you. In the end I upped it with Ferroglobin capsules from Vitabiotics and just took one a day with spatone monthly when I had my period.

However, when I got my iron checked 5 months later, it was only at 10 so still not above the 11 minimum threshold. Since then, I’ve also gone back to eating meat as I had been vegan so hopefully now it will be higher still.

Emergency c section. Heavy blood loss. Iron levels low. I couldn't take tablets refused transfusion due to negative press at the time. Said I couldn't go home with baby (10:2) until levels higher. At the point I was going to sign myself out. I was all over the place , my dad had just been buried abroad I couldn't attend and then labour. I needed to get home and grieve. Got spatone, two days and I was good to go. Hospital couldn't believe it! Hit me a week later, I didn't leave house for six weeks and could hardly move.
