Norovirus - any advice please!!

both DC, DH and I have all come down with V&D in the past 24 hours - it's horrific! Takes me back to the days of morning sickness!!!

Has anyone got any advice on keeping paracetamol/Calpol down? Everything we drink just comes straight back up, bringing with it the pain relief as we've all got a fever and headache.

DC share a room, do you think it's best if we split them between us? So DH has one in the bed with him and I in with the other??

Sorry - just feeling so sorry for myself (and them) and just want this over

fluids is main thing, small sips of water every 3-4 minutes.

How old are your DC & have they been ill, too?

If it is noro, typically suddenly a lot better after about 36 hours of feeling awful.

Letsbekindplease · 16/02/2022 08:44

I know this was probably pure luck for me but when I had the Nora, I read somewhere to eat grapes and drink the yakult drinks as it’s apparently a bacterial infection in your intestine and it’s good bacteria in the bottles (could be wrong Info there ). Anyway, I always buy my friends a pack and tell them to drink the lot as do I and I always get over it much quicker than other people.

Hope you’re over it soon x

Drinking yakult with norovirus? Even the thought would have had me heaving over the toilet

Op - water water water. Little sips. Don’t worry about food. Water.

grandpiano50 · 16/02/2022 08:50

Thank you all for your replies and advice. DC haven't been sick in over 12 hours now which is a relief, I've not been sick in 6 so hoping it's the end of that! DH on the other hand seems to be in the thick of it still.

Feeling very sore but sipping on water and my mums going to drop round some essentials later!

Sorry to rant, I know there are worse things that sickness but my god has it knocked us for 6!xxx

Diarialyte or energy drinks with electrolytes for the next 24 hours. Your salt levels will be out of whack as well as being hydrated so you need to reintroduce salts with water or you'll feel like crap for longer.

Toanewstart23 · 16/02/2022 08:57

No sickness really is the pits

Zolla · 16/02/2022 12:43

I swear by not even trying to eat or drink for 24 hours. Yeh, you feel awful but in my experience, it stops you constantly vomiting. Just don’t even try. After that, I literally start with a teaspoon of rehydration salts drink and work my way up in quantity!

May I also recommend activated charcoal. I take it the minute one of my kids is sick and I’ve avoided the last two stomach bugs whereas it’s got both kids, DH & both grandparents! Maybe a coincidence but so far, I’m sold! Doesn’t hurt to give it a try!

You must drink water Critical
nancy75 · 16/02/2022 12:50

Ice lollies - they give you a bit of hydration & some sugar, they also tend to stay down!
Not ice cream ones like magnums but fruit type

grandpiano50 · 16/02/2022 12:54

Thank you all, I'm not even attempting to eat anything at the moment as I don't have an appetite but am having some ice lollies and water regularly! DC are starting to get hungry now so I'm following the BRAT diet for the next 24 hours so it doesn't spark anything again!

God awful, give me a cold any day!!

Ice cubes or water based ice lollies (not milk based ones) are the best bet.
Then once you're feeling vaguely human again have plain toast but stay off dairy products for another 24 hours. Also small sips of "full fat" (as its known in our house) Coca-Cola.

AnnaMagnani · 16/02/2022 12:59

Just keep the fluids up and avoid dairy - a temporary lactose intolerance is common and can keep the diarrhoea going on for longer.

grandpiano50 · 17/02/2022 06:45

Hi all, another question!

We're all starting to feel better now thank goodness. I know the rule is to stay home until you're 48 hours clear from sickness/diarrhoea but I know that the diarrhoea can linger for quite some time after a bug. Do we stick to the 48 hour rule or wait however long until we're fully back to normal before returning to work/school/social events?

Thanks all!x

48 hours
No one expects you not to isolate with the remnants of the squits!

Toanewstart23 · 17/02/2022 06:56

No one expects you not to isolate

I meant to say

SickAndTiredAgain · 17/02/2022 06:58

48 hours from the last sickness/diarrhoea, even if it lingers.

littlebilliie · 17/02/2022 12:31

Wipe all door handles etc after everyone is clear, we did last time but I contracted it again 7 days later. You can get it again

Gonnagetgoing · 17/02/2022 12:46

Norovirus is horrible. The only thing which helped me was staying off work for a few days but I felt totally wiped out and could've done with a week off work....

Yakult afterwards. and antibacterial spray on all door handles etc after everyone is clear.

Fluids up avoid dairy maybe BRAT after you've been through worst of it.

@Zolla - I was spewing up water - any and everything for at least 2 days...
gamerchick · 17/02/2022 13:00

Noro works by paralysing the stomach, it's a clever little bug. There's no point in eating anything. Focus on keeping hydrated. Suck on ice or ice pops.

Yes I would split the kids and give everything a good bleaching afterwards.

YoBeaches · 17/02/2022 20:08

Glad you are all on the mend. We had this in December.

You might find your not quite right for a few days. I kept getting waves of nausea until 5 days afterwards - it's the stomach healing itself. So take it easy with everyone what you eat.

I would count 48 hours from when the last person was sick/diarrhoea given you are a household, and clean everything thoroughly/ change the beds/ detox the floors type clean

Michellexxx · 17/02/2022 20:11

So awful! We had this in the october hols. I don't think there's much to be done but ice lollies are our saviour in these moments. Very refreshing and can usually keep them down easier. It also takes the kids longer to eat, unlike when they gulp down juice/water and bring it all back up!

IsobelWie · 19/02/2022 07:15

My entire family had this in early January it was horrible. Melon was a lifesaver as its full of water. My son has such fussy taste buds but was happy to eat melon cubes. Dioralytes are always my go to (own brand versions work just as well. I also recommend Enterosgel which helped massively. My Mother in law recommended and it helped with the toilet situation so much !!!!
