Alternative treatment for CHOLESTEROL????

nobodysfool · 01/01/2008 17:39

My mum is 62 and has been told her cholesterol is high.
She follows a healthy diet and was put on various tablets to help lower her cholesterol but she keeps having bad reactions to them ranging from pains in her legs, headaches to chest pains.
She has asked me to help find her an alternative to conventional medicine so i was wondering if any knows where i can look (have tried google but i'm not sure whats a reputable company) or what natural alternative is available and if it works.
Many thanks.

It's very difficult to lower cholesterol through diet as most cholesterol is produced by the body itself. Muscle pain is common with the statin drugs but they are very effective. Doctor should be able to advise on whether the muscle pain will settle with time which sometimes happens. Flora proactive and similar foods will help a bit. I don't know much about natural alternatives but this website is quite good:

Apparently niacin is a supplement that works to reduce cholesterol levels.

I started taking them, after consulting with my gp and buying them off the internet.

I reacted badly with hot flushes and wheezing so only took one dose ,sent them back.

I went on a low carb diet and exercised, and within 6 months I had dropped 3 stone and my cholesterol went from 7.6 to 5.
My gp was very impressed.

Oatbran is also meant to help.

Loads of info if you google.

I have a high cholesterol which is caused by an underactive thyroid. I am trying an indian herbal supplement called Neem at the moment which is claimed to have reduced cholseterol levels within one month of taking it. If you google 'Neem' you will find lots of information

I've also heard that changing to Benecol and Flora Pro-active products can help. Also adding things like lentils and chickpeas to her diet if she doesn't eat them already, cutting right back on red meat, etc.

Thanks satsumamoon-mum already eats loads of lentils. Her diet is pretty balanced and she eats loads of fruit and veg.Not fair really is it!
