Mouth sores / ulcers - can anyone shed any light?

DD is 1 and was diagnosed with viral tonsilitis yesterday. After a week, she actually seems to be on the turn and getting slightly better though she is VERY grouchy with a tiny appetite. Today she developed small white blisters on the outside of her mouth at the 'hinge' of her lips, on one side and a big mouth ulcer on the inside of her bottom lip. As the day has progressed, her bottom lip now looks swollen as a whole. Does this sound familiar to anyone??

Does she have blisters on her tongue?

It could be coldsores/oral herpes.

How is she doing now - if it spreads it can be horrible in ones that age (DS had it this time last year). I would say take her to the doctor in the morning, if it is that then they may treat it.

Has she got any spots/blisters on her bottom/hands/feet?

Hand foot and mouth virus can cause mouth ulcers.

She doesn't have any spots on her feet or bottom and she has one on one knuckle that looks as if it may be a small bite - it doesn't look like a blister. A small dark 'volcano' shaped centre and redness around it. By this evening, she now has an ulcer on her top lip and tip of her tongue. I gave her some neurofen and she perked up considerably. We were holding off on that a bit becuase the GP said it was best to let her low grade fever run if we could to kill off the virus more quickly. So, she's had about one dose a day.

Keeping a 1 yr old uncomfortable to let it run it's course? Whack him round the head really hard and tell him he isn't allowed painkillers - see how he likes it. (sorry )

Please take her back tomorrow and get the ulcers checked - a couple of us on here have had the herpes one spread, it really isn't pleasant

I will do - what's the treatment for herpes?

Oh poo - I've done some googling and I think it's highly likely that it is herpes. We have acyclovir cream here from when the GP diagnosed it as a possibility before (she had one tiny blister that just seemed to go on its own). I can use that on the external blister tonight but is there anything other than pain relief that I can do for the internal sores?

If they want to treat it then they will give acyclovir liquid medicine. They don't always give it though apparently - it depends how severe.

DS was very ill hence having the meds. SMS didn't take her DD in until later and they said it was on its way out again by then.

FlameNFurter · 01/01/2008 19:39

Just pain relief until you can get back to the GP.

Her temp might start spiking

Try and keep her fluids up as much as possible.

If you do a search under sores from Jan last year in the health bit you will see my threads.

Thanks. She has been running a bit hot on and off for about a week. Poor little thing.

How is she now?
