I have just brushed my hair, and took the hair out of the brush to throw away and I saw little things in it, I looked closer and they were moving!!! OMG, what are they? Lice? What do I do? Can I drown them? I need to get rid asap, I feel so plagued. What do I do???? And where did they come from? Do I treat DS too? He is practically bald though (under 2).

You need to go to the chemist and get a head lice comb and a big bottle of conditioner, wash and condition your hair, leaving the conditioner in, and comb through each section of the head systematically from root to tip to flush them out. Repeat every two to three days. You'll break the cycle and be rid of them in no time.

poor you...

southeastastra · 31/12/2007 12:02

lol get a nitty gritty comb, then bung on loads of conditioner and comb them out.

you can drown them in hedrin but you have to keep it on overnight or for about 9 hours.

sorry to lol at your post but it's very funny.

madamez · 31/12/2007 12:02

Awww, big hug. I have had them. You have headlice (probably caught off someone at M&T group, the blasted things go round like wildfire). They only like very clean hair, remember.
GO to the chemist and get a bottle of headlice treatment (unfortunately the treatments all ming and will turn your hair to straw) and a nitcomb. Follow the instructions, and subsequently comb through your wet hair with a tea-tree oil conditioner once or twice a week. You had probably better check/treat your DP if you have one, and inspect DS' head carefully (but don't treat him with strong chemicals, tea tree and a comb will probably do, and if he doesn't have much hair you should be able to see if he has nits too.)

LiceLiceLiceFeck · 31/12/2007 12:04

DO I treat DS? I want whatever super human strength toxic chemicals they have for it, OMG I feel so dirty. I'll have to wait until DH gets back to send him back out for nit combs and any form of nuclear substance that will kill the feckers. Urgh.

fruittea · 31/12/2007 12:05

The first time DD had them, I used chemicals, they got rid of a lot but I still needed to do the combing technique. You could use chemicals as a first blast, but you WILL still need to condition and comb to get rid of any you miss or that hatch later.

fruittea · 31/12/2007 12:06

And yes, comb DS and DH through to make sure...

OrmIrian · 31/12/2007 12:08

Hedrin.

I've just discovered that having blitzed the little feckers and had 4 clear heads a few weeks before Christmas, we are all infested again. So cross. It no longer makes me feel unclean just irritated...

moljam · 31/12/2007 12:08

what till your ds is at school.then itll be fun!my ds has had them so many times since starting school but strangely dd hasnt.were nit free at the moment as no school!ds friend always has them and apparently is never treated poor thing.so school sends out weekly letter saying theres nits in your childs class.WE KNOW!! i swear im going to start saving receipts for everything i use and giving them to school
i treat whole family even though chemist said not to bother ?

im itching now thinking of it

bossybritches · 31/12/2007 12:10

Comb comb & comb again!

Whatever method you use just remember they have a 21 day life cycle so you cannot be sure they are all gone until you have had several days clear AFTER that time.

Basically make it a part of the bath time routine....welcome to the nasty side of motherhood

.....but please don't feel dirty or ashamed it's one of those nastier facts of life & is a big deal at first but you soon get blase about it!

ALomonderfulLife · 31/12/2007 12:11

Awww, crappy time to get them. We have escaped them here so far but most od DD's friends have had them! They are very common, inevitable that you would get them at some point with a young child.

No one warns you about all these horrid things at ante-natal classes do they? lol.

I reackon they should

Dd had threadworms a while back, it was disgusting but it's just one of those things. (I got them too, yuk!)

Hope you get rid of them soon.

moljam · 31/12/2007 12:12

we use hedrin.but also a tea tree conditioner every three days with nitty gritty comb.

LiceLiceLiceFeck · 31/12/2007 12:15

what do I do with the bedclothes?

OP posts:
OrmIrian · 31/12/2007 12:19

I don't think bedclothes are a problem (Quite happy to stand corrected here) as lice are not like fleas, they can't survive away from the human body for very long. And eggs are laid attached to the hair, not just all over the place. So if you clear the hair you'll be OK.

LiceLiceLiceFeck · 31/12/2007 12:21

Thanks for all the replies, just waiting for DH now trying not to touch my head!

OP posts:
smartiejake · 31/12/2007 12:21

wash the bed clothes on a hot wash (at least 60) and another thing we were advised to do was wash coats especially if they have furry collars.

QuintessentialShadow · 31/12/2007 12:21

Set aside one day for Head Lice day.
You wash all bedclothes, for you and DS. Wash all clothes, like jumpers and hats and scarves that you have been using the last few months. (If they crawl on the comb, you are pretty badly infected, and it takes a while to get to that point). Head lice can live up to 2 days outside a head, and eggs a lot longer. Treat yourself and ds (and change bed linens) in a week or so, to get the lice from newly hatched eggs.

Order the Nitty Gritty comb and their oil.

I used only olive oil for my youngest.

foofi · 31/12/2007 12:22

Hope you feel better soon! Remember to keep combing even when you are clear. If just one little egg has been left behind you could be back to square one.

Shannaratinger · 31/12/2007 12:26

i also brought an electric nit comb. use on dry hair kills the live ones .small enough to put in you're handbag if you're out and spot one you've missed. Used on my DD when she caught them at 6mnths.
