When I was a kid I had to have feather pillows and an open window because of a house dust mite allergy

Hi. DD1 has very bad eczema and a proven houst dust mite allergy is the cause. She also has a nut allergy, so watch out for that. Anyway, you will find loads and loads of advice all over the place. 2 things helped me. One was asthma nurse (DD1 has asthma also, but this is easier controlled) Nurse explained that it is humidity which allows the mould to grow on their poo- this is the actual allergen, rather than the mites themselves. Therefore lowering humidity essential- can do this simply by airing the bed and opening the window. Second thing relates to the onerus (sp?) and impractical advice you will be given- damp dust every day, boil wash all bedding twice a week, hoover inside wardrobes etc etc. DD1s consultant (an immunologist) said that you will NEVER eliminate the mites, so it is pointless to wear yourself out and feel guilty about failing. Better pick the things you can do, and do them.
Sorry that's so long, just I feel mothers especially get made to feel guilty for not manging the impossible. There was some documentary on TV not long ago that did exactly that- made me furious. Good luck.

Interesting about the humidity

We have humidifiers everywhere to help DH's ezcema and asthma... maybe this is wrong?

getting rid of bedroom carpet made a huge difference to me (perhaps also makes the room less humid?) I also have mattress, duvet & pillow covered in the dust mite proof protectors and wash all the bedding frequently. Much better!

nut allergy is okay but annoying when OH won't ask if stuff has nuts in

Anti-allergen pillows.
get a Dyson, it sucks up EVERYTHING, hoover religiously.
Wash your bedding frequently
Also, if you have a chest freezer, put your pillows in there for a couple of hours a week, kills them off.

Hoovering/cleaning won't eliminate the dustmites btw.. but it does help keep things ticking over.

I haven't been so good on hoovering this holiday and i'm waking up of a morning feeling like a hayfever sufferer

Mine instantly got SO much better when I moved from a place with fitted carpets to a place with floorboards.

Doesn't matter if you hoover thrice daily - think about getting rid of the carpets if you possibly can.
