Gosh, that doesn't sound good I'm afraid i have no experience but in your shoes - yes, I probably would take him/her to A&E, especially if it seemed they were struggling to breathe in which case I might consider calling an ambulance.

How old is he/her? Have they had a cold? Are there any other symptoms - temperature, vomiting etc?

dressedupnowheretogotilxmas · 31/12/2007 01:47

sounds like croup.
my dds both have had it once, steam really does help. I ran the shower and leant over, but filling the sink with boiling water from the kettle was the best - depends what age / how wriggly your dc.

Here in Canada newer advice is take child outside in cold not steam anymore - you could try that.

If really struggling to breathe - take to A& E - they will give steroids which work in a few hours.

Don't worry about that, I don't believe you can ever be too careful with little ones

Cashncarry · 31/12/2007 02:02

Honestly - they won't think you're over the top I'm sure.

how is your dd? hope she is ok. croup often sounds worse than it is xx

dressedupnowheretogotilxmas · 31/12/2007 08:16

ambulance rwe were nonplssed just said beginning of cough/cold or croup at the worst and to fill her tixylix and calpol

she slept from half three til now thankgod bt shes woke up hot and chestier so god knows

Alambil · 31/12/2007 11:07

tixylix won't help if it is croup, IME but you could try it if you want

Also do NOT give her medised - kids that struggle to breathe in their sleep (as per a croupy cough) should not take it because it is a sedative - it relaxes the muscles, therefore making it harder to breathe - my DS's nurse told me this.

Please - don't give medised (calpol/nurofen are fine)

You will need to raise the head end of her bed/cot (books underneath or something) and keep a bowl of boiling water in there as she nods off to sleep - out of reach, of course... alternitively, sit with her in the bathroom and make it fill with steam (although I prefer the bowl one cos I hate sitting in a hot room!)

You could also add menthol crystals (just one or two) to help her nose keep unblocked.

Croup does sound much worse than it is (sounds like a seal/sea lion bark) and lasts for about a week or so.

My ds got this every other week for 4 years - CAT/message me on here if you need any reassurance

Thinking of you - hope she gets well soon
