Sinusitis remedies?

PyjamaMamma · 03/02/2022 19:34

So, I’ve got what I think is sinusitis - I’ve had sinusitis before but that was pain on the eyebrows and cheekbones, this times it’s on the bridge of my nose and it feels like I’ve been punched. I’ve worn contacts today because my glasses resting on the nose is painful, bending down is impossible without agony. Google suggests ethmoid sinusitis. Has anyone had it and have any great remedies for it?

I’ve been having Sudafed sinus relief which helps but doesn’t last long enough, I shouldn’t really have ibuprofen because I have IBD, Olbas offers instant relief but you’re only supposed to sniff at it 4 times an hour… NHS website suggests painkillers, hydration and rest is the cure so I’m reluctant to call the GP. Any other suggestions please? TIA

OK, this may sound weird but it worked for me and for my husband. Worth a try.

Hot bath, lie face down. Take a breath through your mouth then put your face under water and breathe out through your nose. Repeat for a few minutes.

I used to suffer badly with sinus pain and ended up on antibiotics. Not had them for a few years since I discovered this. Sounds crazy but it does work.

I hope that you feel better soon.

@CatherineCawood it doesn’t sound that weird Grin - thanks for the tip, I will try tonight. I will report back!

You could try putting olbas oil in a bowl of hot water and inhaling the steam? I find that works really well for sinus stuff, just be careful not to burn yourself!

Also you can try a sinus rinse? You use a little bottle to squirt saline up your nose and wash out your sinuses, can help to loosen any gunk in there. You can order the sinus rinse kit on Amazon, you need to use cooled, boiled water to make up the solution.

Definitely second putting olbas oil in hot water, I actually use drops of peppermint and eucalyptus but I think that's pretty much what olbas oil is.
I actually find the tesco own brand cold relief works as well as or better than Sudofed and its much cheaper, has the same ingredients but for around £1 at box.

PyjamaMamma · 03/02/2022 20:46

I will try the Olbas in hot water, thank you Smile - I’ve been using saline to clean my nose but because of where the pain is, it’s quite painful… I will look at the wash kit from Amazon though, I’m willing to put up with the pain if it makes it go away (eventually).

@Rugbymumof2 DH actually bought me a box of Sudafed and a box of Asda’s own as he wasn’t sure if Sudafed had anything special, bless him Grin

I’ve had it several times and always been given antibiotics to clear it up.Confused

Arucanafeather · 03/02/2022 20:54

I would check with GP if it is very painful. I had sinusitis which didn’t go away without antibiotics. I’ve now got permanent rhinosinisitus and I do wonder if that was in part caused because I wait too long before speaking to GP about my sinusitis.

Sterimar saline nasal spray. Used to suffer awfully with sinus pain and infections. This stuff makes the biggest difference

DirtyDancing · 03/02/2022 20:57

Nothing over the counter work for me. I have to get nasal spray from the GP for it

PyjamaMamma · 03/02/2022 21:05

Ooh I had some Sterimar but run out, will get some more! I will also try to speak to the GP in the morning just in case antibiotics are needed. My previous ones cleared up with patience and olbas, but this one is much more painful Confused

Thanks everyone, Flowers @Arucanafeather

Sinus rinse is the only thing that works for me. You can buy in pharmacies.

BigotSpigot · 03/02/2022 21:44

This is going to sound very weird... but humming!

I had sinusitis that I just couldn't shift and read a random paper (another one here pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16406689/).

You need to hum up and down until you find the note/frequency that works. When I found it (it was the painful one!) and hummed (multiple times in 24 hrs) it cleared up within a day.

PyjamaMamma · 07/02/2022 17:41

Just a quick update Smile - I tried most of your tips and felt really better on Friday so didn’t call the GP. Then on Saturday I woke up with a really swollen nose, so DH went to the pharmacy and they gave me Sinutab. It worked well for the pain but unfortunately the swelling is still here so I saw my GP today. Antibiotics and cocodamol for the pain, hopefully that will be the end of it. Thanks everyone, I will keep the tips for next time hopefully I won’t need them again though!.
