Running with a cold (man flu) - is it lunacy?

I've had a cold for most of Christmas, and was feeling better, but I now seem to have returned to having a gunged nose and slightly swollen glands (apart from this I feel fine). It's Week 1 of my marathon programme, am I nuts to try and run through it, or is it Ok to run with a cold?

read once that if the symptoms are above the neck its ok to exercise, if below, then dont.

If you feel well, its probably ok, the run might clear your sinuses!

Damn, that's not the resoponse I wanted

Best go and get those trainers on...

I'd take it easy - cold germs can move to your heart and lungs if you overdo it i have heard.

I meant - if you feel even the slightest bit off colour, best to stay in with a bottle of wine and some snacks in front of the telly!

Hmmm...that's what I'm a bit worried about. Maybe best to just go for another long walk .

if youre only week 1 I would give it a miss or you could end up missing 3 weeks of training.
Give yourself a break for a couple of days and start back then

Followed your advice (didn't run), and now have full on cold, so I'm very glad I didn't push it yesterday. Thank you for your foresight

Hope you feel better soon chocky and can get with the programme. Sounds like you made the best decision. A running friend of mine collapsed with myocarditis because she ran too soon after having flu.

eek sagger - that's very scarey. Hope she's OK now. I'm hoping to have another rest day tomorrow, and then see how I feel on Wednesday/ Thurs. I'm supposed to be doing a 10 mile race on Sun, would be a big shame to miss it, but not worth the risk of being properly sick.

yes, you can put strain on your heart and cause infection if not fit
