Pip not rewarded

Hi all

I applied for PIP back in september as I am deaf I thought I may have been eligible I had my assessment last month where I had to have my sister to help as it was over the telephone.

Unfortunately I got a letter through the post that I have not been awared PIP. My question is is it even worth to dispute it as I know it is really hard for hard of hearing people to claim PIP.

Please advise

I think quite often it’s turned down when you first apply, it’s worth asking for a reconsideration. My dd was turned down, I sent in a few more bits of evidence and asked for a reconsideration, it was pretty easy, someone called me (didn’t need to speak to dd) and went through all the bits that she should have scored on but didn’t, she was then given higher rate. My dd isn’t death but I have heard that lots of people automatically get turned down but then go on to get it when asked for a reconsideration.

I've never heard of anyone being accepted on the first application, and I'm not even joking. It's worth appealing.

I know 5 people in my son's disability group who claim PIP and not one of them got it on first application. It is a disgrace and they just hope vulnerable disabled people won't bother to ask for recalculation. Always ask for a recalculation.

Honestly it can get so disheartening I will call them again I am trying to gather all my evidences together which will probably take more than a month because my GP is absolutely a joke but its definitely worth a try the worse they can say is No which I am mentally prepared for. I feel like they want you to be physically disabled to be able to claim for it :(

I think PIP all depends on whether you meet the relevant criteria. It's about what you need help with - like dressing and making food and washing and bathing. There is also a mobility component.

There are PIP type quizzes online.

There is a really helpful facebook group which helped a friend of mine who was turned down and she was reassessed. She needed lots of evidence to show what she needed help with if I remember correctly.

I'm PM you.

I applied for PIP and was accepted 1st time. I had help filling in the booklet that you have to send in by a charity. Mine is due to ill health and how it has affected my life. I was (to be honest) surprised that I got it but to be honest so relieved. It has been a massive help.
Have a look around and see if there are any local charities that help.

I can't comment on the application but you shouldn't have got your sister to did the assessment with you over the phone. You need to do it yourself - get an interpreter or lip speaker to support you with communication. You need to demonstrate exactly why you need communication support and that you need this on a daily basis.

ThePoetsWife · 31/01/2022 19:50

Oh and they have to arrange the communication support not you.

We got turned down at reconsideration and then accepted. The person at the interview hadn't read the report. The person making the decision didn't read our paperwork or even the notes from the interview. In fact they said that my son didnhave toileting issues - he doesn't- that wasn't our claim. We actually got more than we thought and the payment is enabling my son to live independently. We used Fightback4justice and it was a comparitively small amount for a good outcome. Don't lose heart - fight on - you have a disability and you are entitled to support.
