Piriton is tops

Calomine lotion is OK but messy

Oatmeal or something in the bath is also recommended

You can get calamine in aqueous cream which is great for topical application. Never thought of using piriton but will next time!

3 out of 4 of mine got really bad chickenpox. I got vallergan off the doctor, worked fab for ds1 , did nothing for dd2 or ds2 . You could try anti histimine medicine, luke warm baths (this was good for mine but only helped while they were in bath), calamine cream (did nothing for mine but others swear by it). All children are so different, what works for one doesn't work for another. Good luck, try to be patient and understanding, although it's very hard when they've been whinging and scratching for days on end!

This stuff is quite good. It might arrive too late for you if you order it online though. I think you can sometimes get it in pharmacies.

You can also use regular porridge oats, put in a muslin or thin cloth and tie. Then hang it under the running tap as you fill the bath and/or drop it into the bath and squeeze a bit.

Paracetamol (Calpol) will help to reduce the itchiness, especially at night.

i bought some calamine lotion but had to put it on ds1 when he was asleep. He would only have sudocreme on them when awake.

UniversallyChallenged · 30/12/2007 11:03

Thanks for all that! DH off now with his list for ds and supplies of medicine -choc- for poor old me

probably too late but eurax cream is excellent.

purpleduck · 30/12/2007 12:41

We made a blend of
vitamin e oil (helps with healing/ avoinding scarring} one small bottle
Lavender (soothing/relaxing, also antibacterial so they don't get infected)
Tea Tree (anti bacterial/ anti viral, helps numb the itching)

About 20 drops of each in the vit e

Can also put camomile oil in it too

Worked like a damn for mine

good luck

Thanks wooga and purple, will see if we can find those bits.

Anyone know if children can take piriton and medised/calpol at same time?

Eurax if fabulous

Alambil · 30/12/2007 19:23

Athlete's foot powder - use cotton wool as a powder puff and apply on spots, liberal as you like!

No, I'm not mad!!

RubySlippedonastraymincepie · 30/12/2007 19:24

bicarbonate of soda in a luke warm bath

piriton

calamine/aqueous cream combo

all these worked really well for DS's pox

BoysAreLikeReindeer · 30/12/2007 19:26

Also keep sudo crem and calamine lotion in the fridge, goes on wonderfully cool. Second for eurax cream here.

Good luck

Thirding piriton and baths.

Be aware that chicken pox can also go into any orifice on the body, so check in strange places too. (The spots come in three waves, approx three days apart and can hit new places each time.)

If it goes into the mouth/down the throat, I found that chopping grapes in half and then putting them into a jelly was heaven to eat. The jelly slid down past the spots in my throat - nothing else would - and the grapes were wonderfully cool and soothing.

Best of luck.
