Did anyone here ever get sedated before? What was your experience?

I had to go to hospital for a procedure. I was taken into the ward. The nurses gave me a paper gown and paper shorts for the bottom. A nurse prepared my hand with a cannula.

When it was time, I was wheeled into the treatment room. I remember two nurses approached me quickly and started setting me up with an oxygen tube for my nose, an oximeter for my finger and a blood pressure cuff. Then the doctor came over he he worked on the cannula injecting what I presume was the sedation. I remember I was awake watching the screens and the monitors and waiting to dose of to sleep but I don't know if I slept or not. I remember talking during the procedure but I can't remember what I said. Next thing I know, the procedure was coming to an end and I said 'all done now'. It actually felt like a minute or two. Afterwards back in the ward I was a little bit confused wondering if the procedure was completed or not because it felt like only a few short minutes. I got a camera up the bum and into the colon and they found a few things so I presume the procedure was completed.

What are other peoples experiences of sedation? Are there any doctors or nurses here on Mumsnet that deal with these procedures. All in all it was an interesting and pain free experience.

@ClumpingBambooIsALie

Went to hospital, sat in waiting room till my name was called, went through to have a needle wanged into the back of my hand and a few checks done, back into waiting room. Called through again and told to lie down, wheeled into theatre. They told me what they were going to do, and I assume that after that they gave me the drugs and did the thing. Don't remember anything much until coming round in the recovery area, marching up the nursing station despite being barely able to see or stand, and demanding I be discharged as I was clearly fit to leave. Turns out I get kinda bolshy on midazolam.
I am the same as you but a bit more extreme, to the point I have a warning on my medical notes to never give me midazolam again - had it for sedation during a gynaecology op under spinal, came round to four people holding me down - later told I’d been screaming and shouting, managed to punch one member of staff, tried to rip out cannula/monitoring stuff, had thrown oxygen mask across the room, and repeatedly tried to climb off bed - with legs in stirrups and numb from chest down .

I very, very vaguely remember them putting an oxygen mask on me and me telling them it was a poisonous gas and that I knew they were trying to kill me - I remember being utterly convinced they were plotting my murder, it was terrifying . Apparently I refused point blank to be knocked out and I’m not sure why they didn’t override that !

Further procedures I’ve been given fentanyl or diamorphine instead, which isn’t as bad, calms me down enough that I’m not anxious but still able to have a reasonably coherent conversation and don’t lose memory .

Thankfully diazepam doesn’t have the same effect - or not so strongly anyway - so I’m allowed very small doses of that for dental, smears etc . (I have PTSD, I’m a nightmare patient) .

@BeautyGoesToBenidorm
Same ! Had sedation a few times and I just talked utter rubbish and felt happy as Larry tbh

I had a light sedation when I had eye surgery, I wasn't out of it I just felt blissfully relaxed and calm, so very peaceful. It was wonderful. Especially given they cut 3 holes in my eyeball and spent a couple of hours doing jiggerypokery in there. I feel like I should have felt more concerned about it all 😂

SilverHairedCat · 01/02/2022 09:59

I've had midazolam for dental treatment (phobia) several times.

Once, half way through apparently I took it into my head to get to get out the chair and was trying to punch the dentist. All I remember is someone saying "for god sake, give her some more" and my Dad crashing in the door to see what was happening....

Another time, I had fingerprints bruises on my arms and upper neck where I'd done something similar and they had to restrain me in the chair to stop me - I had apparently got tools in my mouth so couldn't leave. I assume it was a rubber dam, the clamps etc as I was having root canals. I know I asked the name of the drug umpteen times while sat in recovery and apologising for my behaviour over and over. My mate was my chaperone and thought it was hilarious 😳

Fortunately I've just about got my phobia under control now, so don't need sedated any more.

SilverHairedCat · 01/02/2022 09:59

Oh, and diazepam does sod all when I'm in an MRI. Apparently my claustrophobia is much worse than a 5mg pill can control.

On the few occasions, in the past, when I have been sedated I've enjoyed it :-).

squashyhat · 01/02/2022 10:11

Yes for steroid injections in my knuckles (I have rheumatoid arthritis). No problem at all - I was vaguely aware of chat around me but it mostly felt nice and peaceful.

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 01/02/2022 10:28

anaemia — wow, that is quite bolshy. Must've been odd being told you'd acted like that!

AutumnDance · 01/02/2022 12:04

@KTB19

When I had my first colonoscopy, the last thing I remember was the sedation going in. Then I woke up back in recovery where I was quite distressed and accusing the doctor of stealing my bottom. The poor man took my hand and got me to feel my own bum because I was convinced he had stolen it.

It felt so real at the time, I truly believed he had taken my bottom. I remember the nurses giggling and I couldnt believe they were giggling about something so serious.

They must hear some funny stuff I bet.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Oh my goodness that is so funny.

Thank you so much for all of the replies. It's great to read about other peoples experiences. I do t know what type of sedation I got but it must of been a light one. I was trying to make sense of my own experience and that's the reason for the thread so thank you so much for the replies.

I vaguely remember some parts.

Someone either one of the nurses or the doctor asked me Was I nervous. I went into the procedure and I wasn't one bit nervous and I vaguely remember answering not really. I remember the doctor asked me do I smoke. I used to smoke. I remember them asking me was I in pain or was it sore and I think I answered - not really, there's a slight pinch. I think we chatted about the medicine from the day before.
I remember being fascinated with the monitors and the procedure. I think at one point I saw something red like blood on the screen and I pointed and I said something like "that looks f*cking deadly". At the same time it only felt like the procedure only lasted a few minutes. I remember the end very much. There was a dribble down there and I said all done and I was wheeled out onto the ward.
