Sinus problems

What is the most effective treatment for sinus problems? The Pharmacist wont prescribe me decongestant because I have Asthma so she recommended Olbas oil in warm water . I have tried this and it works for about 5 minutes .

I find my Sinus probs worse at night when I go to bed. It seems to be worse when I lie in a certain position too or when I lean forward to pick something off the floor.

Any advice?

You should go see your GP!
Is it cold-related or s long term issue? If it's a cold and mucous build-up then maybe a hot shower before you go to bed (lots of steam) and propping your head/shoulders up on a few extra pillows might help.

I find a hot flannel on the offending area on my cheek bone is brilliant. It just seems to loosen everything up.

I find Karvol is more effective than Olbas oil - and I use it in boiling water , not just warm. I also have a plug-in Karvol thingy which I have on at night & that helps a lot too.

thanks. My sinus problems seems to be a long term thing rather than a winter/cold type thing.

I am def going to try the karvol plug in- never thought of that .

If it's a long term thing you could invest in a nebulizer and use it with saline solution. Like steam really but easier to use and really loosens stuff up. I live in Italy and they use nebulizers a lot here for children's coughs and general snottiness too.

I've suffered with sinus problems after colds for a while now, and had it for ages last year when I was pregnant. The nebulizer really sorted it (though I did use some other medicine too with the saline solution, sorry don't know what the UK equivalent would be)

I get chronic sinus problems which are more than being "bunged up" - i.e. very painful, I get dizzy, nose doesn't run, but there is terrible feeling of pressure in my face. If you reach the stage where your face hurts a lot and no amount of plug-ins/steam etc help, the followimg might:

  • cry (it seems to release pressure)
  • take paracetomol and ibuprofen at the same time.
  • if those don't work, get to the GP for some stronger pain meds and antibiotics as it could well be an infection.

I can also second the recommendation of hot flannels on the face.

Hope you feel better.
