CONJUNCTIVITIS?

puccaupunderthemistletoe · 29/12/2007 20:13

My dd and ds have both had conjunctivitis in the last week, dd is ok now (and didnt need drops) but ds still has it slightly and i ended up going to GP yesterday to get drops for him.

I have now got it in my right eye, i have never had it before, my eye looks a different size to my other eye (smaller for some weird reason i look like the boyfriend of Carla off corrie!) and is very red and very sore, i had another bottle of drops off the doc (given for dd just in case) so have put them in today X 4, it doesn't seem to be helping and my eye is stinging quite badly.

Does conjunctivitis always hurt like this? i look a right mess, plus i have a viral throat type infection and have been quite achy (not sure it tha could be linked - doubt it).

TIA

yes conjunctivitis does hurt. If it is bacteriaal, it can be treated with antibiotic drops. If it is viral - and it could be related to your sore throat - then antibiotic drops won't work.

IME, antibiotic drops work very quickly for bacterial conjunctivitis.

Hi! Everyone in my town is sick, so my GP tells me! We've had really bad colds for the past two weeks (viral) and now DD and I both have conjunctivitis - could be viral but we both have 0.5% chloramphenicol drops just in case and they seem to be working. My throat suddenly got worse and I now have a secondary bacterial infection of tonsils so now have some penicillin to keep me going.
All symptoms you speak of could be due to a viral infection but if things have got worse rather than better worth dropping by your GP cos your natural bacteria balance can get upset by viral infection and sometimes can start to run amock.
Get well soon x

Not sure which it is, but i seemed to catch it pretty quickly off my dc, my eye is a right mess!

Both my dc have had really bad lingering colds but i haven't caught that at all (unusually enough!) i just started with a bad throat and this awful eye on Thurs.

Thanks for the advice, i have never known conjunctivitis at all so i am pretty clueless.

Sounds bacterial then - very contagious. Drops should clear it and you can use cool boiled water to clean around outside of eye to remove gunk - and wash hands well so you don't pass it on, or get it in your left eye.

Bleurgh lovely!

Thanks Mylovelymonster! do you know how long it roughly takes to clear up, or at least stop stinging so much?

Well - I was told to not do the drops for longer than 5 days - so we're doing one drop each eye, four times a day for five days. Do you have the same drops?? Should say on them. Ask a pharmacist - in Boots or other chemist if you're not sure.
Open bottles should be kept in the fridge, and only use one bottle per person and try not to touch any part of the eye with the dropper............anything else I can think of.............no, think that's it
Should stop stinging really soon - if no improvement in 48 hrs go to GP. And that's an order
take care x

mylovelymonster · 29/12/2007 20:53

.........oh yes.........keep away from mascara, eye cream and contact lenses..............

Thanks My lovelymonster, you are a love!

The drops are called chloramphenicol, i had 2 new seperate bottles from the GP, one being used on DS and one on me (was for dd but her eyes are fine now), have done 1 drop 4 X a day, done first full day today on me, i started ds on them yesterday.

GP doesn't know i have got it now as i didn't know i had it then.

Oh how lovely, god you catch all sorts don't you once you have kids! lol.

If you happen to be breastfeeding then putting Breastmilk on your eye will work wonders!

I usually use cooled boiled water with salt in to cleanse the eye but then I haven't had the need for YEARS! Hope you get it sorted soon

mylovelymonster · 30/12/2007 16:32

pucca - normal? My experience doesn't go as far as grisly disfigurement.
I'd just use cool boiled water without the salt as easy to use too much and that will dry your delicate eye - go see GP tomorrow morning!!
