HELP - My 4 year old has swallowed a coin

Yes - I'm 1p short.

dd announced at tea that she swallowed a coin at school this morning, and that she was very brave and did not tell any of the teachers. I'm pretty certain that we have a genuine one here, rather than the porky we might have!!

Should I be pulling on the rubber gloves and sifting through the poo? How long for? Advice welcomed.

x-ray, just in case.

Lonelymum · 17/11/2004 19:40

There was a very recent thread about this -within the last week. Sorry, I can't remember where or do links, but you could look for it.

whizzz · 17/11/2004 19:40

There was a similar thread a while back but I can't remember from who. Try a search

warmmum · 17/11/2004 19:42

Wow - you guys are fast! How do I search for old threads? Sorry - still quite new to MN.

Lonelymum · 17/11/2004 19:46

Darn! Just found it and you guys beat me to it. Can anyone explain how to do links or is that too complicated to put into words?

warmmum · 17/11/2004 19:46

Have found old thread. Useful, but still not quite sure what to do, but as she is still comfortable am not rushing to A&E. Will let you know when the penny drops!

Hi Warmmum

that was my thread .. DS swallowed a coin last week

He really was fine the whole time .. his crying and complaining of tummy ache was more embarrassment cos he knew it was a silly thing to do

All I can do is tell you what consultant told me .. it is always best to get an x-ray as the coin can lodge .. most dangerous place is before it reaches stomach and chance it might enter lungs .. but if it did there'd be respiratory distress

Once its through the stomach it will most likely come out .. there is a very very slight risk that it can get stuck in a valve between intestines .. you will know this has happened if DD gets bloated and vomits .. in which case you MUST take her in .. it won't happen though

There's no point in checking poo unless you want to

I think I would take to A&E for x-ray .. as I was told that that is the protocol in every case (there have been cases where its lodged temporarily with no signs but then dislodged IYKWIM?).. but TBH its a long wait (which reinforces what a silly thing it is to swallow money)

HTH

I swallowed a 3-penny bit as a child (wonder how many here remember those?!)Nobody did anything and to this day I don't know if it came out "naturally" or is still rattling around inside somewhere. They were very chunky coins as I remember. I also swallowed most of the beads on a pop together necklace. My mother just said "Well you shouldn't have been putting it in your mouth".

mrsjingles · 18/11/2004 09:03

I swallowed a 2p when I was 8, never told my parents, and I have no idea if it ever came out!!, but I'm still here to tell the tale none the worse for the expereince.

warmmum · 22/11/2004 20:01

Hurrah!! The penny has dropped. Lovely colours - all irridiscent, although it is undergoing a bleach treatment currently!

Thanks for all the advice.
