I don't know if anyone can give me any advice.I had thrush back in September, which went away after using Canesten. Now I've gotten it again.I've looked at the Canestan instructions & it says to see your doctor if you get it more than once in 6 months.Do I really have to go & see my Dr? I've only ever had thrush once before,so don't know anything about it or why I have gotten it twice fairly recently. Is it a fairly common thing?

Any advice on whether I do need to see the Dr,how to shift it & how to prevent it coming back would be very gratefully recieved.Thankyou.

Look at your diet. High sugar foods and wine can upset the PH down below and cause recurrences of thrush.

If you have a sexual partner have they treat thrush aswell - it can pass from one to another and the male doesn't know they have it.

As the above post states high sugar foods - cut these out where ever possible - christmas is not good for low sugar foods!

I had never had thrush and got it after a course of anti-biotics. I then had it twice more within 6 months so the last time I treated dh as well and I haven't had it since (although it's only about 6 weeks since the treatment so we'll see). Interestingly I had a urine test for a medical just before Christmas and I had trace sugar in my urine, so it may have been a combination of higher blood sugar and reinfection from dh.

Oddly, the pharmacist was very reluctant to sell me two doses of thrush treatment. Possibly because he was male he seemed to think that the last course of action should be treating my dh, despite it being so easy.

I always get Thrush at Christmas, for me its all those rich, sugary foods, in fact I came back from the Pharmacy about 2 hours ago with my tablet.
BTW does anybody else get thrush so badly that they can't use the single dose pessary because it stings too much?
Sorry for hijacking your thread.

I suffer on and off Thrush and have done for years. I now know what sets it off so am very careful. Like bran says, antibiotics always starts it off, as does white bread, tampons, pantyliners and change in bodywash/soap. I buy asdas cheap 'Pure' soap which is mild, no longer wear pantyliners or tampons. Ok with Always towels. As also stated, diet a key factor. Too much sugar/wine can set it off. I just think some women are more prone to it than others and they do say once you get it you will always suffer from it. I had it a couple months back and it took two goes on the canesten pessary to clear it. If you look it up on the internet there is lots of advice on how to prevent it. Bless you, it gets you down I know.
Discoverlife, yes, have had it so bad it kills to use pessary. I put natural yoghurt 'down there' to sooth it then did the pessary later.

Ran out of yogurt, and you don't half get funny looks from the men in the family when you walk upstairs with a pot of yopugurt and a syringe (no needle).LOL.

onlygirlinthehouse · 30/12/2007 01:03

eat lots of live yoghurt too, I find that helps to prevent recurrences. its bloody awful, you have all my sympathy. I always find its worse when i am stressed so xmas the best ( worse ) time for it! I dont think theres any problem with using over the counter remedy more than once in 6 months, always think instructions err on the side of caution anyway, you will be fine to go to chemist again. Hope you get better soon

Thankyou all for the advice & suggestions.I probably eat less sugar now than I've ever done, but it won't hurt to cut it down a bit more.(I like baking so cakes & biscuits are my downfall.)I eat loads of white bread to,so will try changing to wholemeal to see if that helps.

Oddly enough,it seems better today,so haven't used the treatment yet.

Thanks again,I'm sorry that you all suffer from this nasty too-it is so uncomfortable.

are you breast feeding? if so you will be passing it back and forward, mine continued for 6 months, 3 anti biotic courses and lots of stuff for baby, only got rid of it in end by changign my diet and getting rid of yeast!! no bread, wheat, alcohol, fruit sugar etc.. quite strict for a while but it worked
