Wisdom teeth

I thought I was in the clear with my wisdom teeth as I'm 30 now, but I had one start coming in last year, and for the past week it's been hurting, really tender, partially erupted, possibly infected (suddenly developed a strange taste in my mouth last night), and making all of the teeth next to it hurt as well. And now there are two more coming through!

I know I need to get in touch with the dentist, but I'm terrified. Never had a tooth pulled before. I'm made myself sick with worry reading stories about dry sockets and botched recoveries. I haven't been to the dentist in years actually, know they need a good cleaning. I have a really low pain tolerance Sad

Please tell me your experiences with wisdom tooth/molar extraction and your recovery, calm my nerves a bit

Mine were impacted with no room to come through. I had the 4 of them out in a oner under general anesthetic at the dental hospital. The recovery was absolutely fine. It was uncomfortable for a few days, but honestly, I had no problems whatsoever. Please make an appointment with a dentist. If they're pushing through, the constant pain from that is worse than having them out.

I had all 4 out at once.
No dry socket, no botched recovery.

Phone the Dentist ASAP. Chances are you will have to wait for an appointment and extraction.
Teen booked an appointment in September but can’t be seen until March this year, despite having pains in his teeth, & DH had to wait around 5 months last year for an extraction and had a few rounds of antibiotics whilst waiting because they couldn’t see him earlier. 5ere is a huge backlog in our area.

Thanks for the replies. Glad to know you both recovered fine. I'll definitely be getting in touch with the dentist this week. Hopefully, I won't have to wait too long and your poor DC, that's a lot of time to wait with toothache.

I think my main concern is dry socket. I will obviously do my best to prevent it when the time comes.

I had all 4 out a couple of years ago and it was the best thing i ever did. I had dry sockets and tbh yes was in agony but you come through and i would do it all again

loloballlolo · 28/01/2022 17:01

it's not that bad and the actual op not really painful at all except aching after (relieved by painkillers). be sure to keep the wound clean after, in a few days you will be right as rain.

I've assisted on lots of extractions.

Not all wisdom teeth need to be pulled.

It could be that the area is not clean enough around the area. A great brush for this is tepe tuft brush. Keep the area very clean and use mouthwash.

Also, too add in the 1000's of extractions we've done only about 4 had dry sockets. You'll be seen as an emergency with a dry socket. We pack it with eugenol which smells glorious. I love the smell of it Blush and it acts as an anaesthetic. You'll be fine Smile.

I’m in the same situation as you, I’ve got impacted lower wisdom teeth. One side isn’t giving me any issues but the other is partially erupted and pushing on the teeth next to it 😣 This started a year ago, dentist referred me to my local hospital for removal. Was seen 8 months later (so last summer) and was told it would be a year until they could take it out because the waiting list is so long! 😫 Luckily it hasn’t given me too many problems but over the last week it’s playing up again and I can’t eat on that side 😫 I’m having mine out under general, can’t say I’m looking forward to it but I’ll be glad to get rid of it. Get to the dentist ASAP, the faster you start the process the faster it will be over! I’ve only ever had one tooth extracted and I was absolutely bricking it too but honestly it was fine. The dentist injected me all around the offending tooth and it was very quick and painless, recovery was absolutely fine, too.
