he is really straining and crying loads - won't let me near to put any vaseline on (sorry if TMI )

what on earth can i do??? doesn't show any signs of coming out - help!!!

(he was trying all day yesterday to do this poo but couldn't although obviously not as painful then)

any advice much appreciated

glycerine suppositories...

I can only sympathise. Poor little thing.

have just been through the same with DS aged 18 months this morning and on and off over the last few weeks. We've both been in tears over it.

It's got to the point where we have to gently help 'it' out which seems to work a bit, but if your Ds wont let you near (poor little thing) then I guess that isn't an option. And TMI I know, but this method depends on them being able to get a bit of it out first.

Have you tried massaging his tummy and 'cycling' his legs. Apparently this helps get things moving, but it might be that it's gone beyond that. Could you get him to an out of hours GP this morning to perhaps get a suppository which might get this particular poo out by working on it directly? Maybe also try some calpol so the pain is less?

In the end it will come out, but the waiting and watching them strain is awful.

I am sure you have tried all the other stuff (califig, water, prune juice, wholemeal toast)
Also there is lots on constipation on the allergies thread. Different methods etc.

I hope your poor little boy gets relief soon. It's horrible for them.

THings I have known to help:

Warm/hot drink
Warm/hot drink followed by cold drink
Knees up, clockwise rubbing of tummy
Lots of jumping and running around
Warm bath
Prunes
Fresh orange juice
Warm milk

Will he put the vaseline on/in himself?

thanks so much for all the tips - have tried the bath but he wouldn't stay in for long

he has stopped straining for now but still hasn't pooed - i do have some glycerin suppositories somewhere so will go and find them - although the poo is often half out so not sure how i'd get the suppository in

will do the calpol thing tho - didn't think of that

santa took his milk bottles away and we thought that the reduction in milk going in would help the constipation (as he is prone to it) but maybe it's still too early for results? didn't know constipation could be from allergy so will check that out - thanks

My DS had exactly same problem. Used same drugs as you but often wouldn't help. What did trick one time when really desperate was promise of toy he really wanted. We went quickly down to shops and bought it so it was waiting. Even though like your DS problem was physical, gave him the extra encouragement he needed to try. Also try glycerine suppository. If still desperate, would speak to GP.

DD (3.2) gets this sometimes, despite being a veggie and eating a shed load of fruit and veg - the only thing that works for her is drinking a big a glass of warm water.

good luck, hope your ds gets some relief soon, poor love.

Thanks everyone - he stopped straining after a while so we put a pull up on him (although he is potty trained) and went to John Lewis

Whilst choosing a bed he did a poo in his pull -up at which point we made a big fuss (well done, clever boy etc) much to the total embarassment of the very young shop assistant

thanks for your support - think it was just as stressful for me as for him!
