Has anyone requested working from home as a reasonable adjustment for health condition?

I’m trying to put together a letter for my boss requesting to work from home 2 days a week (i work 4 days) as a reasonable adjustment for my rheumatoid arthritis. I worked successfully at home all through lockdown & last year was lucky I didn’t have any flare ups. I’m wondering if the more flexible approach/less stress of getting to the office etc, contributed to this.

My employer have now asked us to start returning to the office 3 days a week so I’m going to request 50/50 home & office. I’ve had a bad flare up recently as had quite a bit of personal stress and my boss has been very supportive & has allowed me to wfh but I’d like to make it a bit more official on an ongoing basis. I would be happy to go in for more than 2 days if it was required some weeks but would like generally to do 50/50.

I was wondering if anyone else has requested wfh as a reasonable adjustment either full time or some of the time & if it was accepted? Thanks

Yes for similar reasons many years ago and it was accepted. I think I had to make a business case for it (wfh wasn’t so common then) but my manager supported me and it made a huge difference to my number of flares and reduced my sick days etc. I did two days at home and three in the office but with flexibility for when I was flaring etc. I think they called it a reasonable adjustment. It worked really well. I hope you can get it approved

If you boss is being helpful on an informal basis currently, I'd leave it like that for now. It will be hard for them to formally agree something different for you if they're currently arguing that everyone needs to be in.

I think you'll have more chance of success if you wait until the wfh dust has settled.

Wouldn’t 50/50 mean going in 3 days a week anyway?

For a 4 day week?

Do you have occupational health? Could they support you.
Can you ask for evidence of your sick days over the last 5 years. Evidence how they've reduced.

Then out in the case for 25/75 where needed on their part for you attend 3 days?

It's absolutely a reasonable adjustment. However you'd probably also need to evidence the travel having an impact or they could offer to replicate your home environment in the office as that has worked for you.
