So I had an audiology appointment yesterday where they found I have hearing loss in my left ear. I've just turned 23, and also just found out I'm pregnant.
Ive had some symptoms going on over the last 9-12 months, facial numbness (left side) smell hallucinations of smoke from the left nostril, and now this hearing loss. Some headaches now and then too.

My gp wanted to rule out an acoustic neuroma and requested a scan urgently, however the mri team at the hospital have said it's not safe for pregnant women to have a scan unless it's an emergency. I will have to wait until I've had my dating scan done.

I'm so upset. I feel like I'm going to spend the next 12 weeks stressing over this mri instead of trying to enjoy my pregnancy. I feel robbed..

I don't even know what to do now. Im worried if the symptoms get much worse I'll be pushed aside and will just have to get on with it, even more worried if there is something sinister going on it's going to be ignored for the next 12 weeks..

I've not heard of anyone having an MRI while being in early pregnancy either..

CT scans aren't safe in pregnancy but MRI generally are. The hospital I work at performs MRI scans on babies in utero when an anomaly is detected on ultrasound. MRI scans don't use radiation.

@FreedomforWA thank you for the response!
I live in the UK, the general rule I've been told is to wait until the second trimester. So I think I will probably just have to do that x

If it helps at all, I also had a suspected acoustic neuroma and the consultant told me not to worry because although it sounds scary, it is so slow growing that you would die of old age before it would kill you.
I would try to make an appointment to speak with your doctor and see what their thoughts are regarding the pregnancy.
I had the MRI and they didn't find anything untoward. Fingers crossed all is ok and you have a similar outcome.

@goldensilver thank you so much for responding
Yes I'm planning on getting in touch with them tomorrow.

Was is a normal mri scan or an mri with contrast? X

Both actually. I had the initial MRI, and then I was scarily sent a letter asking me to go back for further images with contrast. I honestly thought it was bad news and even asked the nurse at my GP practice what she thought and she said they must have found something.
Anyway went back for the contrast MRI and it was all clear. Fingers crossed for you x

I can't remember exactly what age but I think I was about 30ish? They didn't actually find anything, it was just suspected and then I was given the all clear after the MRI. My symptoms were one sided tinnitus, blocked ear and numbness.

rmummyofone · 26/01/2022 15:57

Omg
I'm glad to hear it was nothing!!
was it facial numbness?
As that's what I have. Just near my left cheekbone / temple.

Yes facial numbness radiating from the jaw. Never really got to the bottom of it but definitely held a lot of tension there and have a history of teeth grinding at night.

Garman · 26/01/2022 16:08

Well you're probably 4-6 weeks pregnant at least? So it'd be 6-8 weeks until you can have anything that requires waiting until second trimester, not 12 weeks.

rmummyofone · 26/01/2022 16:16

@goldensilver I'm glad the scan was all clear though
That must have been a huge relief

OP posts:
rmummyofone · 26/01/2022 16:17

@Garman yes the scan will be in 8 weeks time so it'll be anytime after 8 weeks I'll be offered an appointment, which at our hospital even after you've been offered one it's a few weeks wait. So I'm expecting nothing less than a 12 week wait anyway :(

I had the same symptoms nearly a decade ago when I was 25, never got to MRI stage but mainly because I didn't push it with Dr's. The symptoms lasted about a year on and off then disappeared.

I was quite stressed at the time (didn't even realise that I was until later, I only had a part time job), and when my stress subsided, so did my symptoms.

Lots of love and try to forget about it for now xxx
