My DDs are both ill but dd1 who is nearly 5 is worse.
She was sent home from school last weds with cough, feeling unwell ect.
She was very unwell for a good few days and seemed to be getting better. Then on monday night starting saying her ear hurts, took her to out of hours doc on weds and she said it wasnt infected and is just a symton of the virus she had, and should clear up on its own. Been waiting, giving dd calpol and nuerofen but still waking up cryin, crying during day and generally very sad

Do i take her back? Im sure it shouldnt go in this long and surely the neurofen and calpol should be covering the pain??
Anyone else had this, and please tell me it will end soon, Im soooo tired zzzzzzzzz

take her back!

dd1 who is 4.5 had this exact thing!

she had an ear and throat infection.

there is a nasty virus out there, you have my sympathies.

we're on our 5th night of broken sleep.

yurt1 · 28/12/2007 23:17

Ear infections can take a while to go. DS3 had repeated ones last year and he was often off nursery for a week with them. If she suddenly worsens I would go back, but I don't think the timescale is that unusal ime.

The time when it went on and one he actually had another ear infection in the other ear iyswim.

WanderingHolly · 28/12/2007 23:19

Viruses can hang on in there for a long time.

I do think another trip to the dr wouldn't be a bad thing, though.

Hope she and Expat's dds have a good night.

lisad123 · 28/12/2007 23:25

i hate it, she isnt having anything come out of her ear, which the doc said she would have with ear infection. I just feel so sorry for her, and im losing my calmness, as im not getting enough sleep at night and then when dd2 is napping during the day dd1 is crying loudly and waking her up.

she wont eat, she wont sleep, she just wont give in god she is suborn wonder who she gets it from?

the doc said she would be havinmg things come out of her ear with an infection? my ds sufered chronic ear infections when he was younger and NEVER had any ear discharge

yurt1 · 28/12/2007 23:30

NOt necessarily. DS1 had frequent ear infections without effusion. DS3 has a mix -sometimes his ear drum bursts, sometimes it doesn't, The standard advice is to leave them now and just use ibuprofen and calpol. When ds3 was in hospital last year with 2 ear infections (he had a seizure hence the hospital stay) they woudln't give antibs without a swab and said they were best left. They do take a while to clear though.

WanderingHolly · 28/12/2007 23:31

agree with loopylou6.

I get ear infections - not always with a discharge.

yurt1 · 28/12/2007 23:32

The 'standard advice' having changed since ds1 had his when it was antibs all the time. Having done both - antibs with ds1, no antibs with ds3 and a similar number of ear infections between them have to say I prefer the without antibs appproach.

By 'not infected' they may have meant with a bacteria. Most ear infections are viral.

lisad123 · 28/12/2007 23:35

i wonder why they have changed the advice?? Seems odd. How long should pain last then?

it worries me sick when they won't eat!

i hope she has a better night, lisa, but i know where you're coming from with regards to losing calmness.

dd1 is also so thrawn it's not true and she's been sooo obstinate since she fell ill it's like she's not her at all and we just want the old dd1 to come back to us.

lisad123 · 28/12/2007 23:47

expat, its good to know im not the only one, but hate that your going though the same thing. Its terrible isnt it?
She has already been up crying tonight but i sent dh. I will get a break as dh is home this weekend, so he will do the playing with her thing, whiile i do EVERYTHING else LOL

dd1 calls out for water all night, lisa. it's about the only time she wants to drink much of anything.

but the no eating thing is so worrisome to me because she's so skinny already.

i hope your dd has a better night.

dd1 is on erythromycin because amoxicillin gives her such bad thrush, but the eryth seems to be giving her bad diarrhoea.

it's really awful, isn't?

it's the worst part of parenting, when they're ill!

expatinscotland · 29/12/2007 15:12

how is she today, lisa?

hope she's doing better.

dd1 is still recovering - she had a good night, but still weak from the cough.

poor souls!

lisad123 · 30/12/2007 23:21

She stopped complaining of ear ache at last!! Still running a temp, and looking pale and sorry for herself.
DD2 still got horrible eye YUCK!

I want to go out, its the last week of school holidays and still not planned to go out for fear of not being able to go.

Lisa
