you have to be extra careful with what you eat..I gained quite a bit of weight before I was diagnosed 5 years ago..once the thyroxine kicks in..if you eat healthily, any weight you have gained should start to come off..but ive always found that even on thyroxine, I can still gain weight far too easily

SpacecadetLovesChristmas · 28/12/2007 19:38

you are on levothyroxine..100 mcg is the usual starting dose, they will regularly re check your thyroxine levels to see how you are responding to the treatment and will adjust the meds accordingly..it could take a few months though before you feel 100 per cent..but you will notice the difference when you do

SpacecadetLovesChristmas · 28/12/2007 19:40

yes its me!..how are things for you??..

My mum had this undiagnosed for so long for a while she couldn't even get out of bed! It's taken her a long time to recover, nearly a year really. Don't be hard on yourself. She has lost lots of weight through being on the correct dosage and doing weight watchers.

I had a baby 6 months ago and I have now just been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid triggered by having a baby. Fortunately they caught it early because of my mum's history. So I have baby weight and the thyroid weight to deal with. I did have an overactive thyroid for about a month (quite common) and didn't lose any fecking weight, whilst another mummy friend has overactive thyroid and is now 2 stone under pre pg weight !

Keep having blood tests to check your levels.

Hello I have just recently been diagnosed with a post-partum thryoid problem, I hope you don't mind me joining your thread. Have found the whole underactive thyroid thing a huge shock. I felt fine after my DS was born till he got to 6months then I stated to feel really breathless and had loads of palpations. Felt like I wasgouing to die as my heart was beating sooo fast at night it was just horrid. When I finally went to the GP he said that my thyroid was underactive, was really shocked as I thought it must be overactive. Turns out it's a common post pregnancy thing. Went to see an endo who told me that I have really eleveated throid antibodies so am now on thyroxin for life !! am on 100mg and still feeling really wierd. Have only been on it for two weeks but have been shocked by just how crap and depressed I feel. Can't belive all this has happend really as pregnancy and delivery were all so easy and had no medical problems before.Just wanted to hear from some others who have this problem and am interested to hear about anyone who has been told they have high antibodies but have gone on to have more kids. Soooo want more kids and am sure it will be ok as this is such a commom thing in women but would love to hear some good news from others with same condition who have had more kids without probs.

fruitscone · 06/01/2008 22:07

judyjane - my thyroid prob is not post-partum. Mine started way before getting pregnant first time but I hope my experience can reassure you anyway. Keep taking the thyroxine ... it can take a while for your body to adjust to it and you may well feel a bit up and down while the system readjusts. I know I did (but then I also suspect I had the problem for several years before it was diagnosed). While I was working on getting to the right dose, I found it reassuring that I had days of feeling good, interspersed with days of feeling crap. But the good days reassured me that it would be possible to feel a lot better again, and hopefully on a more constant basis.
When diagnosed I had very high antibodies (over 10k) and they came down dramatically after my first year on thyroxine. So much so that I got pregnant with my first child very quickly after we started trying. So take heart, keep taking your tabs and I hope you start to feel better soon!
P.S. I know what you mean about feeling shocked. I felt like this too, like it was some huge thing to be on drugs for the rest of my life. But remember you are supplementing a naturally ocurring hormone which you body is not making enough of itself. Bascially you are getting your body back on an even keel with a little help from outside. And it's a very common condition. Hope you feel better soon.

judyjane · 07/01/2008 11:06

Fruitscone, thankyou so so much for the message. I can't tell you how much better it has made me feel. I am so pleased to hear that things calm down with time. It really is such a rollercoaster to start off as you get all these odd feelings and sensations that you just can't compare to anything else. I am really pleased that the antibodies did'nt seem to be too much a problem. The internet has so many scary things on it about antibodies and miscarrage. I got myself in to such a tiss which i think was probably made worse by the thyroid imbalance. The endo did'nt help much when he told me that the antibodies were high as he kept going on about how he had'nt seen any that high in months etc etc, I think they were around 2K. In fact I don't really find him that reassuring,he is not really interested in any symptoms of worries that I may have, he just sort of laughs when I try and tell him. I am feeling a bit better in my mood so less depressed but am still feeling really weak, my arms and legs feel like they are made of lead. I am however, really encouraged that I will get back to normal soon though. Thankyou so much

fruitscone · 07/01/2008 12:06

judyjane - I meant to add (but forgot) that I felt absolutely fantastic during my pregnancy. I had been worried I would feel worse again but that wasn't the case. Since giving birth I have also continued to feel great. I would even go as far as to say, the pregnancy returned me to feeling how I felt pre-thyroid problems.
I know what you mean about your endo's attitude. The specialist I see (very rarely) is an arrogant tosser who says nothing and refuses to answer my questions. Luckily my GP is excellent and much more reassuring! I hope you feel better soon!
