Wasn’t sure whether to post this here or in Children’s Health but as DS is now 16 I thought it might be more useful here. This is very long so will try to be as brief as possible.
DS1 is 16. Has always been very healthy, is never ill and hasn’t actually seen GP since he was 10! He got Covid this time last year, wasn’t ill with it just lost sense of smell and taste. Recovered and was absolutely fine. About a month later he got Bells Palsy. Treated with steroids and resolved very quickly(was back to normal in a week as we caught it quick).
Since then he hasn’t been quite right. He is absolutely exhausted, his hair has gone very thin, joints ache (he is very sporty normally) and he can’t concentrate on anything. GP agreed it sounded strange and did a blood test this week. He called late last night and spoke to DS (I wasn’t there) and said the blood test showed that he’d had glandular fever but we have no idea when as he hasn’t been ill and his B12 levels are very low. They are doing another blood test and a stool sample to check for instrinsic factor.
I know about B12 deficiency as I have Pernicious Anaemia and I’m terrified that’s what he has. His diet is good, eats well with a varied diet. There is no way he’d be B12 deficient through his diet. GP said he’s going to speak to Haemotology and find out what they suggest. I’m not an anxious person but I’ve gone into complete panic mode. His friend (and my best friends son) died last year from a brain tumour and I’m now worrying it’s something worse for them to be speaking to Haemotology.
