I've lost the weight (pretty much) and now my goal is to tone up what I"ve got and really get fit in 2008. I was running until last summer when an achilles injury put paid to that for months, and I haven't started anything else.

So I'm starting this thread to state my training goals and to help me stick to them.

  1. Running 3 times a week, 5km a time by mid February (think that this should be achievable with a gradual and slow build up over six weeks)
  1. Walking EVERYWHERE this year: no more nursery runs in the car because we haven't left enough time, only exceptions being pelting rain. Walking to shops, walking to a from nursery, walking to and from parents etc etc. The problem with this is that I have an appointment twice a week, that I can't really get to in the time by walking, I'd like to aim to run to this by say March (it's a five mile run and I'd have to do it pretty fast in order to make it).
  1. Some kind of weight training programme and sits ups to tone arms and stomach. Something short that I do every day, looking for advice, pointers to websites for this please. We have a set of dumbells at home for this.
  1. Dancing once a week. Mars, I'm going to come to salsa, am determined, and would really like to do a dance class once a week.

All of this should increase my fitness levels and lose me that stubborn last few pounds.

Anyone care to join me?

I did loads of exercise all last year until towards the end when it imploded a bit as everything just got on top of me

so a new years resolution is good for me as my body is quite squelchy

so I don't run or absolutely never have as I get too out of breath and wouldn't have any idea how to run at all

so I shall gym and swim..my swimming costume is now too big so I have to get a smaller one first

I am dreading going back to the gym as I have missed a few weeks and all my weights will have dropped

the bit of my body that is the worst is my tum not sure if its just too late for that but i hope not as i feel very conscious about it in certtain exposed positions lol

Can I join in, too?

Did the weight-loss over the last year and I'm more or less right. I jog 6 k regularly and occasionally swim but really need to tone up. Don't really do the gym thing - any other ideas?

FlameNFurter · 01/01/2008 13:29

I keep pondering actually running today (by that I mean getting to the end of my road and passing out )

Heathcliffscathy · 01/01/2008 16:31

ran for 15 minutes today.

felt really good tbh, i've missed it. will work to your training thingy norks, thanks for that.

Went for a jog with the dog and all the questions I have had for over a year now, popped into my head and I realised that maybe someone on this thread has some answers.

Do you take supplements? How do you avoid injury? As you get older, how does this change? I'm early forties and thinking joints/menopause/osteoporosis. Yes, weird train of thought but I do most of my productive thinking when jogging .

Heathcliffscathy · 01/01/2008 23:37

i don't take supplements.

i'm not an expert but reckon that a lot of stretching before and after running helps, as does listening to your body, and NOT pushing it hard, as does resting.

Thanks soph,

Yes, I am a slow jogger - 45 min to an hour to do 6.6 but will add some stretching. I'd love to go every day but just can't so I average 3 times a week.
