Posting for traffic - DD croup sounds

My DD is 2 and it seems that every time she's had a cold recently ( 3 colds ), she seems to end up making croup noises.

She doesn't really have a cough with her colds, but when she does cough or strain, it sounds like barking / croup. I can also almost immediately hear the stridor / laboured breathing thing.

She's always given steroids for this quite quickly.

Obviously I'll talk to the doctor about why this keeps happening, but does anyone have any experience with a similar thing ? I usually take her to see the doc at the first sign of the weird breathing sound.

It all started with waking up in the night a few days ago. She sounded it pain, it sounded like her throat was sore. Then she had a congested nose and now I can occasionally hear the weird sounds when she strains / coughs occasionally and the stridor breathing occasionally comes on since this morning.

Did anyone else's kids just get these weird sounds with every cold ? I would really love it, if for once, she just had a cold that didn't require medical intervention.. last time we ended up in a and e in the middle of the night, because of the breathing issues..

Where I live they give double the usual dose of steroids to ward this off. Large paediatric teaching hospital.

Every time she's had it, as soon as she gets the steroid, it goes away. It's really great. But it's still needing medical intervention, which is fine. But I wonder if she'll ever just have a cold that doesn't cause this for her and that can just be managed at home.

My DS was given a Salbutamol inhaler to keep for these times, after having croup twice.
He went on to develop asthma and I do wonder if it’s relevant.

Ds had croup/barking sounding coughs until his early teens, now they are just normal. He was never bad enough he had to get treatment though.

Cold air can be brilliant at clearing it. (Obviously still seek medical care if needed)

I have been wondering if it could be an asthma thing...

I see. Does he not have the weird sounds when he breathes ? My DD has minimal coughs. But she comes out with the weird laboured breathing sound, very quickly.

A trip to the osteopath every time this happened really helped my son.

My dd used to get croup every single time she got a cold. At one point it was every 6 weeks or so when she started school. She grew out of it around 4/5. It can be draining! A humidifier and cold air helped.

We’ve had an ambulance out twice for croup and have steroids at home, but what has really helped is 3 days of ibuprofen from the very first barking cough. He does still manage to go from first cough to breathing difficulties in 15 minutes occasionally, but it’s much better than it used to be. He’s also prone to pneumonia and bronchitis but it doesn’t seem like he has asthma.
