Excruciating pain- root canal needed :(

Visited the dentist yesterday with tooth pain. Was told I had an infection under the filling of one of my molars that needed treatment asap. She removed the filling and applied some medication to the tooth nerve and covered it with a temporary filling, ready for root canal treatment at some point in the next couple of weeks. Tooth felt fine yesterday but I've been up since 3am in absolute agony. I've already reached the maximum dose for both paracetamol and ibuprofen and neither have touched the pain- in fact, I feel quite poorly in myself (shivery and a bit delirious- not helped by being kept awake for days by a teething baby). I was prescribed antibiotics by the same dentist this morning and have got a consultation booked in with another dentist on Friday re: next steps.

The problem is, I really can't function with the pain I'm in- the only thing that's helping slightly is holding a hot water bottle to my cheek. The minute I move it away, the throbbing and pain comes back again. Has anyone got any tips or advice on how else I can reduce the pain?

I had this last year OP. You have my sympathies. Mine was also a molar 2nd in from the back. It already had a root filling which had failed so I was having re-root treatment. The treatment itself was fine (I actually dozed off at one point and dentist had to wake me up as my mouth was too relaxed. In between appointments it was excruciating though. I was literally pacing the floor as didn’t know what to do with myself. Paracetamol and Ibuprofen didn’t cut it for me and codeine was the only thing that gave me relief. All fine now, post treatment. Really hope you find something that helps.

Just have it taken out, OP. As PP said, root canal treatment often fails anyway...

Deedoo · 24/09/2023 08:09

@waterlego did you have pain

NotTheOtherMother · 24/09/2023 08:12

I had this and had to go to the doctor to get pain relief. Over the counter cocodamol wasn't touching it.

I also had to have 4 courses of three different antibiotics from the dentist and the root canal attempted twice before it all settled down. Took about 3 months in all.

Deedoo · 24/09/2023 08:16

@NotTheOtherMother so your first root canal failed

I don’t know how much tooth there was there to work with but so far the reroot has been great- no issues at all.

Deedoo · 24/09/2023 18:54

@waterlego did you have a decay in it first time do you know why it failed and had to be re done what did they tell you ? X

waterlego · 25/09/2023 09:16

I can’t remember to be honest @Deedoo. I mean I think they said that sometimes root fillings fail and that’s just the way it is. 😕

I actually had a different one fail earlier this year and this time went for extraction because the dentist said he wasn’t super confident than re filling it would be successful. I figured taking the bloody thing out would cure the issue 😂 Was planning to get an implant there but can’t afford it so I’ve got a gap but it’s not easily visible.

@waterlego was it painful to remove a root canal tooth? Mine is in the sinus cavity so scared it will perforate

waterlego · 25/09/2023 09:40

It wasn’t painful at all as the area was numbed. I don’t know anything about sinus cavities or perforation though I’m afraid.

Deedoo · 25/09/2023 09:42

@waterlego my root canal is 15 years old and it had a decay in the tooth. Endo wants to re do it but I hardly have much of a tooth. How many years did your RCT hold up
