Impacted wisdom tooth dentist not helping

G123454321 · 18/01/2022 19:28

My tooth is errupting an inch below the tooth line.
Saw my dentist for the 3rd time today. Gave me antibiotics when he thinks they won’t work and told me im beyond standard dentistry.

Wtf???? Ok so what do I do? He says a I need a surgeon. They have one with a 6 week wait for just an assessment.
Asked for a referral and was told they don’t normally do those but he would ask my normal dentist to “note something down”

Tried my private insurance and still can’t get anyone to help this side of March. I can’t eat, sleep or function. They don’t care.

I’m lost and crying. No idea where to turn.

Sorry to hear you are suffering. Impacted wisdom teeth can be horrendous. So have they sent a referral off for you? I'd be ringing them back to double check that. I'm a dental nurse and some dentist are naff at doing referrals and some are amazing.
Have they managed to take an x-ray of it?
Sometimes impacted wisdom teeth can be extremely difficult to remove, especially in the lower jaw and even more so if they are wrapped around the nerve that runs through your jaw, this controls glad your lip and tongue so it's important and bruising or nerve damage is kept to a minimum. Usually this means sending you off to see a maxillo-facial (max-fax) surgeon who is a specialist doctor who is also a dentist, or a dentist that has a masters in oral surgery.
I am afraid even pre covid the wait time for an assessment in most places was 4-5 weeks at best, but emergency dental treatment doesn't seem to be too bad at the minute, hopefully it's the same near you.
Ring the practice tomorrow and chase up the referral. If they are a good practice it should have been sent already.
Long lasting ibuprophen tends to be the best type of pain relieve for dental pain provided you are ok to take it. Privately you'll be looking at a few hundred up to £1k depending on how they want to do it. They may also need to do a CT scan if the nerve is involved. But if it's uncomplicated and your dentist just isn't very comfortable doing them have a look around and see if you can find any private oral surgeons who do clinics in local practices.
Good luck xx

Thank you. The dentist I saw was not my usual one at that practise but the head of the place and asked me what I meant by a referral!
He’ll ask my dentist to note something down so highly unlikely anything will have been done.

I’ve emailed a request for my X-ray which I will chase today.
The tooth is in the lower jaw in a bad position. I’ve tried bupa surgeons as my insurance covers it but still looking at 4 weeks.
Have one more I can call this morning.

I don’t care about cost at this point I just want it done asap.

Lots of back and forth today to get things sorted. My dentist is going to do a referral and discuss an X-ray with me at my check up tomo as my current one is not good enough for the private surgeon. The kind they need my dentist can’t offer and consultant doesn’t have a machine at the hospital.
I have an assessment early next week with a local practice who may be able to fit me in end of the week for surgery, if not mid March.

If not I have an appointment booked with a bupa consultant end of next week but I need a better X-ray for him..

If that fails I’ve booked in to see an oral surgeon at a private dentist a few towns over who can do on the day surgery. If I hadn’t booked this and chose to later it would have been mid to end of March next appt available.

All booked knowing that I have other options on the table and have their cancellation periods given to me.

Call it overkill, but a secretary I spoke to said all surgeons are minimising private load to 1 day a month due to being called to duty to help the nhs backlog.
I can’t handle this until mid March. At least this way I know I’m only hanging on for 2.5 weeks max and not losing money with deposits beings refundable in set times.

Know how you feel. I had a botched attempt at having some teeth removed in September... was reffered to a dentist surgeon.... I have to wait till THE END OF JULY to have them removed. Angry

It’s truly disgusting how they just don’t seem to care.

I feel like an idiot for booking multiple appointments but I literally will do anything to get this pain gone. I made sure I explained to each one that if another came through quicker I’d be cancelling.

The head dentist I saw yesterday amazed me at how useless he was! You need a surgeon.. no offer to refer or talk of proper X-rays etc..

Typical nhs do the bare minimum without any care for the outcome.

I’d go private all the time if I could afford it but who can?
I’m borrowing to pay for the above as it is, hopefully my first option who is the cheapest and closest to me comes through.

Whereabouts are you OP?

TankFlyBoss · 19/01/2022 17:08

I had this situation with impacted wisdom teeth in the first lockdown. Antibiotics didn't work. Eventually paid a private surgery maxillo facial surgeon £2500 to take them out under IV sedation - included all x rays, CT scans, prescriptions and aftercare. The wait on the NHS would have been 18 months. Totally worth it.

@SilverontheTree

Whereabouts are you OP?
Chelmsford way in Essex

Tankflyboss I think I would have done the same in that situation.

I’ve been quoted £400 by the first one I’m seeing, £500 for the last bit they are both local with no sedation.

The middle one is a bupa consultant which will be covered by my insurance bar the £300 excess.

If the first says they can do it.. game on and I cancel the others.. and so on and so forth.
It just helps knowing I have help on the way.
It must have been hell having this during lockdown.
