I defrosted a choc brownie dessert early xmas afternoon & half of it was left in the fridge. We came in from my parents last night & while I was upstairs putting dcs to bed dh polished off the whole lot. It had said on the pack to eat within 24 hours of defrosting & this was more like 30 hours it had sat in the fridge (uncovered on a plate as I had intended just binning it).

Now dh has spent the whole night throwing up, having the runs & horrible pains across his tummy

I called NHS24 & they just said not to let him drink anything 'til he's managed to stop being sick for at least an hour but he hasn't managed that yet.

Has anyone had food poisoning & how long before I can expect him to feel better 'cos the poor thing's in bits just now.

If he can't keep anything down you could give him icecubes to suck - slowly. It can help to ease the nausea and prevent dehydration. However, if he becomes feverish, and the vomiting continues and he develops diarrhoea he may need to go to hospital. I had salmonella food poisoning once from frozen scampi and ended up in hospital on a drip for a couple of days - I am not saying it will come to that, but you need to kepp a close eye on him - frozen foods, especially anything containing dairy can be potentially dangerous.

Urggh poor him, well poor you actually because I'm guessing you'll be the one clearing up and keeping everything ticking over while he regrets his bout of gluttony!

It's unusual actually for something like this to happen as even defrosted frozen desserts, in the fridge are not that prone to spoilage - unless they have raw eggs in.

In any case, get your bum to the pharmacy and get some rehydration salts which he can sip SLOWLY and he'll start to feel better in 24 hours. However he will take at least a week to feel normal again and may have an intolerance to dairy foods for a few weeks.

Thanks folks - I'll bundle the dcs up & take them along to the chemist just now.

I feel sorry for dh but I'm also blardy 'cos instead of barfing in the loo he decided to do it in the bathroom sink - the result; one totally blocked sink half-filled with puke & no sodding plughole unblocker liquid, just a plunger which I am not splashing around with

Oh yuck. I have something like this at the moment and think it's food poisoning. Am not feverish or vomiting, but on day 2 with no food as I can't bear the thought of eating anything and know I couldn't keep it down.

My husband keeps trying to get me to go to see the doctor - but it's slowly getting better. That's ok, right? How long does this take? Are the rehydration salts necessary or can I drink very weak herbal tea? Am sipping water and do feel much much better today - spent yesterday comatose in bed when not in the loo. Lovely, I know (sorry).

Like your name, GW - did you hear about Terry Pratchett? What a shame.

GreebosWhiskers · 27/12/2007 10:50

Thanks yajorome

I did hear about TP - how utterly shit is that? Feel massively guilty too 'cos following hot on the heels of the thought 'oh what a shame' came the thought 'oh no! no more discworld books'. Selfish sod that I am.

I'm in the Ankh-Morpork Knitters Guild on the ravelry.com knitting forum & have just set up a group project called Pratchgan 2008 - 87 people from the UK, US, Canada, Europe, Israel & Australia are sending me discworld themed knitted squares to sew together to make an afghan to send to TP who apparently enjoys spinning & knitting himself. This seemed like a good idea at the time but it's slowly sinking in that I'm gonna wind up sewing together 100 6 inch squares then crocheting an edging around them! We should end up with a blanket measuring 5 feet on a side & covered with DW pictures - am I sad or what?

Hope you feel better soon.

GW boiling water and washing powder will dissolve the blockage without you having to go within baoking distance.

yajorome · 27/12/2007 19:16

GW- wow! That's quite an undertaking. Sounds fun though - I didn't know he was a knitter. Know what you mean about wondering about future books, too.

I'm feeling better and actually had enough energy for a shower which helped immensely. Ready for bed already, though. Hope your dh feels better and the sink wasn't too bad to unclog.

GreebosWhiskers · 27/12/2007 23:47

Glad you're feeling better yajorome.

The sink was a total horror show. Nothing I put down it worked so in the end it was on with the marigolds & out with the plunger which is now festering in the wheelie bin doused liberally in dettol & wrapped in plastic

He's been informed that if he ever throws up in the sink again I'll divorce him - what does he think the loo is for?
