mrssunshinexxx · 17/01/2022 08:56

Please can you tell me about it?
How long in hospital?
Do you get put to sleep ?
How painful for how long afterwards?
Did the haemorrhoids come Back?
Are you glad you had it done?
Thanks

I had a haemorrhoidectomy about 11 years ago. I was in hospital overnight. The following weeks were the most painful of my life. Every time I had to poo my anus was stretched (despite taking plenty of laxatives) and throbbed for hours afterwards; a poo in the evening meant no sleep that night. I was off work for 8 weeks and could really have done with 12. It was agony, and for years my poos were the diameter of a small dog’s, though I think this was the surgeon’s fault, and I was offered a stretching process, but no-one was going near my bottom again!

However, they have never returned, and so long as I keep up my fibre intake I have absolutely no problems now.

Not sure this is very helpful, but whatever you do, do not believe the medics when they say “there will be some discomfort for a couple of weeks”. It will be agony for many weeks, but does work.

This has really scared me @Molecule but I'm grateful for your honestly I have a 18 month old and an 9 week old only just recovered from emergency section there's no way I can be in agony with this recovery for so long, maybe I shouldn't bother with it

It was utter agony @mrssunshinexxx (and I’m not a wimp, 4 c-sections and back at work within weeks). In hindsight I’d try all other options before a haemorrhoidectomy. Especially a high fibre diet and keeping my stools extra soft. Only good thing is they haven’t returned.

MissSmiley · 17/01/2022 19:36

@mrssunshinexxx I've had banding done twice, both times came home straight afterwards and wasn't that painful at all, the actual piles were worse.

SM33 · 17/01/2022 19:42

Totally agree with everything Molecule has written. Made childbirth seem like a walk in the park! I would advise trying all other options before having a haemorrhoidectomy.

But I don’t think banding is as bad if this is an option, although no personal experience of this.

I've suffered with and still do with fissures and piles for years. I've had banding and botox. Think the Botox was for the tear but had the banding done at the same time. I was put to sleep but it doesn't take long. From memory the pain was easily manageable. Mine are still with me but like I say I've suffered with it for years. Like the other poster said I've heard it's very painful for weeks and there's no way I could go through that with the other health things and that that already get me down, let alone if I was to have an operation like that on top of it. I agree with trying to keep yourself from getting constipated and eat fruit, veg and stay hydrated to keep your bowels as soft as possible.
At the time I had private medical insurance so that may be why they did do it under general anaesthetic because I was already in a fair bit of pain with it all. I think they just give you a slight sedation if you go with the nhs. But you could discuss any fears you might have about it and they may give you a choice.
I feel your pain literally every day so I really sympathise. Good luck x

@Molecule I had my consultation last week and the doctor did say it wouldn't be a haemorrhoidectomy for me as they aren't internal, only external. I know you aren't an expert but I mentioned to him how you said it was absolute agony and he said this wouldn't be the case becayse they aren't internal do you think he's fobbing me off ?

Sorry pressed send too soon I am having a flare up at the mo and it's agony and not pregnant ! I think it's due to dehydration so been hammering the water and putting germaloids cream on but fucking hell they are horrible things

@mrssunshinexxx he may well be right, mine were internal but I do have to say they have never returned. Perhaps speak to your GP and see what they say, as they must see the results of haemorrhoidectomies all the time, as I can’t be the only wuss. I do think once you’ve had them done concentrate on your diet, make sure you get enough fibre etc. if I skip my wholemeal toast or high fibre cereal for more than a couple of days I get constipated and whilst I blame 4 pregnancies (3 in 4 years) for my piles I’m sure not taking care of my diet exacerbated them.

mrssunshinexxx · 15/02/2022 00:54

@Molecule how long would you say it was agony for ? Could you still look after your children / walk/ drive etc ? In no way do I think you are a wuss I think thrombosed piles are one of the worst pains I've dealt with. It's debilitating plus I keep it to myself as it's so embarrassing !
I am thinking that yours may of been so painful as they were internal though

There was a pessary a Gp prescribed for me called proctosedyl which worked very quickly for any flare up. I have one external and a couple of internal.

I don't think it can be used during pregnancy as it has a steroid but was a life saver afterwards.

Bizarrely I've not had any for years but suddenly have after Covid!

Molecule · 15/02/2022 10:33

@mrssunshinexxx hard to say, and it was about 12 years ago now, though time has not dimmed the recollection of the agony. Exh was definitely not sympathetic to any pain but his own, so I did kind of continue life, the worst pain was after passing a motion when spasms lasted literally for hours. I certainly drove, as live in the country and no other option, and did all the usual household things, but I guess at a slower pace. I do know when I went back to work after eight weeks I really felt I needed more time off. My youngest though was about nine so my children were not as demanding (in terms of proper hands on care) as yours will be.

Molecule · 15/02/2022 10:36

I think what I found so hard was that with all other operations you gradually get better (although I have to say c-sections are the only ones I really have experience of), with this every shit brought more agony. And uncomfortable pooing went on for many months/years.

mrssunshinexxx · 16/02/2022 14:47

@Molecule god it sounds so bleak but I know I don't want to live with them forever a couple of mine are skin tags 🤢 and none internal I've been checked a few times which was pleasant ! The doc assured me if none internal it shouldn't be horrific which I suppose makes sense when you think about bowel movements. I'm nervous tho

@mrssunshinexxx
did you ever get this done? I’m looking at the same thing now x

mumwithallthebooks · 02/12/2024 21:45

Me too! Mortified to have to go to GP tomorrow but is so painful!

mrssunshinexxx · 04/12/2024 06:53

@mumwithallthebooks what did gp say ?

@Tryingtodobetter82 no as I fell pregnant again. Ended up I. A and e in my third trimester with the pain of them. Hideous

I rang to chase up my operation and now been waiting 40 out of a possible 52 weeks. I'm very nervous about the whole thing

Made harder in that when I'm not having a flare up I'm in no pain but it does affect my sex life im so self conscious and hygiene reasons I want them doing
Very scared though
