Is this pain caused by wisdom teeth? Why do they hurt so bloody much!

Ouch, ouch, ouch!

Experiencing what I think may be my wisdom teeth finally coming through (at 24, nearly 25!) It hurt like hell! I can only feel one properly under my gum on the top, and the one on the other side feels like its at a funny angle.....and hurts like hell too! I'm going to go to the dentist to get x-rays anyway as my ENT consultant asked me to do that as it was probably causing my ear problems.

But really, are they supposed to hurt so much? My whole face is in pain, and they are giving me what feels like tension headaches/migraines, so intense that they make my vision go funny and make me feel dizzy. Why has nobody ever said to me that they hurt soooooo bad!

(feeling very sorry for myself)

Sorry to hear you're in pain Dee. I had my wisdom teeth out at age 24 - at least, I had 3 of them out and the 4th has yet to materialise. The dentist arranged it after a routine dental check - I didn't have any pain at all till after the op when I looked like Queen Anne for a week. Reading your post I now see why I had to have them out. Pity your dentist didn't foresee this and have them whipped out years ago to prevent this. I had to go into hospital and have them out under g.a. It went quite smoothly for me, but other young people were having the same thing done and one of them ended up with an abscess.

My granny used to say that they came in around the time you had children so that you could sympathise with their teething

Yes they can hurt really bad. I had my bottom two out at 18 after having huge pain. One widom tooth was stuck between jaw and other teeth and it was pushing everything - mega pain and I also managed to get infection. Much better after getting them both out but do have a whole in my jaw bone.

Top two were removed at 20 years after x-rays at dentist, same thing would have happened,.

Yes, def wisdom teeth. The pain can be horrendous. You can also get what i think is called 'referred pain' - ie the tooth may be the source of the hurt but you can feel the pain in other places, which is why any part of your head (or indeed your entire head) may hurt like hell. I would def consider having them removed - it'll avoid this kind of thing recurring. Many people dont have enough space in their mouth for the teeth to come through properly and they then grow at all sorts of odd angles, and put pressure of other teeth etc.

Mine were what they call 'impacted' which it sounds like yours might be so you might have to have them out!

dee24 · 27/12/2007 18:33

I really wouldn't mind getting them pulled! I have already had a tooth removed and braces to help two of my teeth into place as there was no space (I have a very small head, all my friends tease me about my childrens hats/glasses etc ) So I'm guessing that there will be very little space for more teeth. It's just amazing how a few little teeth can make you feel so awful. Any tips for easing the pain in the meantime? It's not too bad at all today but I know it will come back...

I had impacted wisdom teeth too which kept getting infected because they were half through but no room to come out completely.

I was told by the dentist to keep taking the paracetamol or ibuprofen as once the pain takes hold it is more difficult to get rid of than if you never let it come back at all. You do need to see a dentist although I got referred to the hospital to get them taken out.

Definitely have them out though. They will only keep causing you trouble otherwise.

I was in horrendous pain with mine - turned out they were infected.

So were the second lot that came through (didn't all come through at once).

Go to dentist asap, get them to have a look.

As for pain - try sucking ice it might numb it on top of painkillers.

I am sorry to hear you're in pain. My wisdom teeth came through in my early 30's. I had them removed by the dentist who advised that they can cause pain in the ears which I had recently been experiencing

Try to contact your dentist tomorrow for an emergency appointment.

My last wisdom tooth was removed during a routine checkup - quite annoying as I hadn't had dinner which was forbidden after the tooth was removed!

Had an infected wisdom tooth out at age 28, hurt like hell!
