Anyone got any soothing remedies? - DD has coughed, a dry throat type cough, for four days.

Benylin doesn't make any difference (I don't believe in cough mixture TBH, think it's a con) but what can I give her that might help?

Tried honey and lemon. Any other old fashioned soothers?

I was going to suggest honey. There was a study recently that showed manuka honey helps.

Furball · 26/12/2007 09:59

strong blackcurrant squash

JingleBelgoHoHoHo · 26/12/2007 10:03

I would make the blackcurrent squash with hot water

KbearingUpUnderTheStrain · 26/12/2007 10:05

she's had hot blackcurrant with honey (my mum used to put a teaspoon of suet in it when we were kids - bleaugh!).

she's now having some greek yog and honey.

It's so painful she says, her throat feels red raw. Poor love.

ice cream and ice lollies!

JingleBelgoHoHoHo · 26/12/2007 10:07

my dh always eats custard when he has a bad throat.

Kbear · 26/12/2007 17:19

She's worse than this morning - just brought her back from my mum's early (left DS there playing trainsets with my brother!) and put her to bed. She is coughing in her sleep.

I wish I could help her stop.

discoverlife · 26/12/2007 17:21

Neat honey sipped slowly from a teaspoon.

Kbear · 26/12/2007 17:27

I'll try that when she wakes up - she had greek yoghurt and honey earlier and is drinking loads but every other breath is a cough and her throat is sore.

Kbear · 26/12/2007 20:15

now is in and out of sleep and crying out with pain after every cough - she is maxed out on calpol and nurofen and I think it is going to be a long night.

I know there's no point calling the doc for a cough but I wish there was something that would take away the pain so she could sleep peacefully, poor love. She hasn't had a full nights sleep since Friday (me neither!!).

TenLordsaLapin · 26/12/2007 20:19

How old is she Kbear? If she can cope with it, get her to gargle with some warm salty water. Just gargle, don't let her swallow it! It will help start her throat healing and soothe the raw feeling. Trust me, I am doing the same thing myself at the moment! I've eaten half a jar of Manuka honey with no effect!

foxinsocks · 26/12/2007 20:20

aargghh

mine have got this now

gawd, isn't illness BORING

GO AWAY bloody cough ggrrrr

foxinsocks · 26/12/2007 20:20

oh and medised Kbear!

Kbear · 26/12/2007 20:33

she is 8.

it's just so awful to hear and I thought she was over the illness having been ill since Friday.

All she wants to do is sleep and the cough is so bad she can't.

Haven't got any medised and I couldn't give it anyway on top of calpol and nurofen. Is it paracetamol based, I've never used it. Is it better than calpol?

I have a mince pie with cream and a Jamaican coffee in front of me and kid you not it's the best bit of Christmas so far. And work tomorrow!

foxinsocks · 26/12/2007 20:34

omg you must get medised. Yes, I think it's paracetamol based. Has a decongestant in it which is like a sedating antihistamine and sends them off to sleep. Is a godsend in situations like you describe!

Be warned though, dd (age 7) says it tastes horrid. Don't tell dd before you give it to her though!

Kbear · 26/12/2007 20:37

Will be buying it tomorrow. Can't believe my kids are 8 and 6 and I've never used it!

thanks

yomellamoHelly · 26/12/2007 20:41

Something that lines the throat - so milk and fruit juices like mango. Maybe a lassi if you're feeling adventrous. Ice cream went down well with ds1!
