Is £3500 overly expensive for a dental implant?

I've had a lower molar extracted yesterday and now have the same tooth missing on both sides. Because of this I think I could do with at least one of the gaps filled in so I can eat properly. Don't really want to have a bridge as teeth next to gap are healthy. My dentist quoted £3,500 for the implant though. Is this normal for a molar or are they charging a lot? They are very good and have been brilliant so far but I'm not sure if I can afford such a huge amount of money, even on 12 months finance.

@Angrymum22 interesting. My dentist told me that having a gap can affect facial muscle tone and also that the tooth above can drop down in to the gap. She seemed adamant that implants are the way forward but then I guess they would do as they are the most expensive treatment. I've been eating on the side that I've with the older gap due to the other problem tooth and it is awkward. My gum where the gap is gets damaged from certain foods, which is uncomfortable. I also do think it has affected my facial tone on that side. I'm not really sure what direction to take as I would like to have one side of my mouth that I can eat properly with but the cost is extortionate. I know they are very experienced and highly rated dentists at my practice so perhaps that's why they charge so much.

Angrymum22 I understand what you mean. The dentist has a great reputation but obviously nobody can guarantee that it will be perfect.
And I just cannot afford the UK prices Confused
I have a dentist here, one abroad and this new one. I try everything to preserve my teeth.
I am actually having 2 implants and really should have had them done a lot earlier but there was talk about braces as the neighbouring teeth have moved but this seems the best option for me.

[quote Shehasadiamondinthesky]I pay £1200 for mine.
i travel from Somerset to Brighton (day trip) to get it done, they are experts in their field and like to keep their prices low so implants are available for all, I've had 5 there and am very pleased with their work. The oldest one is 10 years old and has just lasted brilliantly.

Wow, I'm in the north west but maybe I need to travel to Brighton! That is very cheap in comparison.

Prices at my dentist (SE/home counties) are £3K not including the initial extraction and any bone grafts. I had the first part done in April 21, the post was put in last August and I'm about to get the crown part in the next week or two. Just when I've got used to the gap and the gum's hardened enough to brush properly!

I did need a bone graft (more £) as the old roots were huge and left a massive hole. It's a bit of a misnomer - not a piece of bone from elsewhere, it's granular hydroxyapatite that is packed into the cavity and helps form new bone by providing the raw materials.

I did know before I started all this that you have to take more care of an implant than a normal tooth or crown. I wish I'd not cracked the original molar's root on something, but these things happen!

I got 10% off by paying upfront.

I paid £5000 for two in Oct 2019.
