Hysterectomy for migraines???

I’ve been suffering with increasingly worse migraines for years, lasting 3 days and I’m completely floored by them. They’re hormonal so a hormone supplement has taken edge of them but they’re still debilitating and make me miserable. I’ve tried multiple other drugs but nothing has had any real effect.
Gynaecologist has suggested that ultimately a hysterectomy plus hrt could be an option as I’m old enough to be approaching menopause in next few years, but I’m reading very mixed reports. Anyone any experience of this as a solution?

Hysterectomy and HRT have lessened mine slightly-although that’s not why I had the hysterectomy, it’s just a happy side effect.

My specialist nurse practitioner said that they refer to neurologist now for people who suffer a lot with migraines, could you request a referral?

They can prescribe candesartan for migraine prevention (I couldn’t tolerate it mine) and add in amitriptyline if the candesartan doesn’t work as well as they hoped. I know a couple of people who have sumatriptan injections for migraines too as they are fast acting.

I hope you find a solution to lessen the frequency/severity soon Flowers

What have you tried drug wise and have you seen a neurologist?

My life has been absolutely transformed by Botox. I had still have so many triggers including hormonal. I had some response to topiramate, couldn't tolerate amitriptylline or propranolol, and wouldn't have been able to tolerate candesartan either (because I am just annoying like that!)

However there is something out there for everyone. I also have a Cephaly device which is good, but not as good as Botox. And that is without mentioning the new crgp meds.

My neurologist said that it isn't guaranteed to work and could cause hormonal imbalances to make matters worse.
Keep at it, try different preventatives. I still get about 3 a week with the odd bad acute attack but it is much better than 6 or 7 a week. I take topiramate.
I also use cbd which I think helps too.

I feel like I've tried everything for migraines, apart from a hysterectomy (topirimate, hormone treatments, Botox, triptan injections, various prophylactics) - and the one thing that's worked for me is a Keto diet. If you haven't tried that, it may well be worth your while, especially if you're considering a hysterectomy.

My migraines were triggered mostly by hormonal changes, but I had plenty of other triggers too (stress, lack of sleep, various foods). Keto has virtually eradicated them. Have a read about it if you haven't already, it's been life changing for me.

Had a hysterectomy and my migraines got worse if anything.

15 yrs later just started HRT patches (oestrogen) and funnily enough, not had a migraine since starting them. It's been four months now and it's so 'unusual' to have gone so long without one.

I was thinking it was just a coincidence.

Thanks all. I saw a neurologist after having tried many preventative medications. The one thing that actually worked was the combined pill taken without a break but because it was decided hormones are a migraines trigger for me, the pill put me at greater risk of stroke so I had to stop taking it. Gabapentin, triptans, anti depressants, completely t-total, diet changes etc all have no effect. Low dose hrt has taken the edge of (fewer niggles during the month) but still getting them every couple of months, anti sickness meds don’t really work either and just seem to postpone the vomiting making the whole episode last longer.
More thought needed I guess.
