Can anyone tell me what a temp. of 40C is in farenheit?

Your wish is my command: 104. Poor little thing!

zephyrcat · 16/11/2004 17:51

104 - is she ok?

carla · 16/11/2004 17:55

Any advice from anyone whose child also refuses Calpol and Nurofen? It makes her gag and she vomits it up again. When she was v. little (still in nappies) she had suppositories, but he didn't offer me any and tbh I think now she's a bit older I wouldn't get away with them anyway.

tepid sponging down carla, have you tried that? Or squirting down the meds with a syringe? If you squirt it in the right place they can't help but swallow it. Then give her a treat afterwards.

Branster · 16/11/2004 17:59

OMG 40C. That is very high carla. have you phoned your doctor or NHS direct yet???
You can try getting the temp down by cooling her body with lukewarmish water (not cold and not hot), make sure the bathroom or room you're in is a comfortable temperature and sponge her body down with a damp sponge or flannel. Is she drinking anything at all? If she takes milk, try diluting it with water to reduce the chances of her being sick. Can you put the nurofen/calpol in her drink and hope she'll take it that way?
You could try giving the medicine with a syringe (although she might still refuse it). Or have you got anyone else in the house who could distract her with some soap bubbles or something funny like that.
I hope she's OK (and you of course)

carla - how tough. Only thing I can think of is popping into the pharmacy and see what they suggest. First thought is a different brand that has less distinctive flavour that you could mix into something - a yoghurt maybe?

Branster · 16/11/2004 18:01

There are also some patches you can put on her forehead to cool off (they don't reduce the temperature but make her feel more comfortable) called Cool'n'Soothe

Branster · 16/11/2004 18:03

stupid me, just saw the title 'just taken dd to the docs' so obviously you've spoken to them. sorry

carla · 16/11/2004 18:07

YOU ARE ALL SO LOVELY. Trouble with the sponging down is the temperature has made her feel freezing. Would you be cruel to be kind, even though she thinks she's cold and I'm just making her colder? And being horrible to her? I guess I must, just makes me feel awful.

OP posts:
tamum · 16/11/2004 18:10

I think you should carla, however cruel it sounds. I would definitely try the syringe thing if you possibly can- if you squirt into the side of the throat she's less likely to gag. Good luck.

Gobbledigook · 16/11/2004 18:10

Carla, I'd go with syringing in the Nurofen. When temp is so high you can give Nurofen and paracetamol together - best check this but pretty sure we were told to do that one frightening night when ds2's temp would not come down with calpol alone. Gave him it with Nurofen and it was down in half an hour.

Otherwise it is the sponging down I think.

How old is dd?

Gobbledigook · 16/11/2004 18:11

Not to frighten you Carla but you really have to be 'cruel to be kind' because there is always the risk of a febrile convulsion if her temp remains over 40 for long.

Won't necessarily happen but a risk.

Branster · 16/11/2004 18:13

oh poor you carla. see if any of this works:
get a room warm (air a room first, open the windows for 5 min because it's cold out there), close the windows, put the heating on and make it comfortable so you can stay in there with a t-shirt on without sweating or feeling cold, take dd in the room, have some big warm towels to hand and a big bowl with tepid water. let dd wear her trousers and take the top bits off and gently try and sponge her half top with a flannel (not soaking wet) and see how she feels. better to do this in a bathroom maybe. then you can actually put her in the bath tub for 2 min then straight into a dry towel and have a nice cuddle.
I'm afraid you have to be a bit tough here. the downside is if she starts screaming she might be sick again .

Branster · 16/11/2004 18:14

make sure the house is not too hot and the water not too cold. a bit confusing, i know. sorry.

carla · 16/11/2004 18:17

Gobble, the syringe and Nurofen was the first thing I tried. Have to the sponging.
