Cortisone injection for tennis elbow?

Blupblup · 05/01/2022 13:12

Has anyone had this? I've been suffering from tennis elbow for quite a while so I'm due to have this done shortly. I'd be interested to know from anyone with experience how long it takes to settle and if you got benefit from it?

I had one for a shoulder injury it settled quickly and has been 90% improvement long term without repeat. Everyone is different and rest is needed as well

When I've had it done, you notice a benefit fairly quickly as they put local anaesthesia in with the steroid. However, it didn't really have any lasting effect for me, and the only thing that has worked is acupuncture combined with being really, really careful about how I do things.

I had cortisone injections in the wrist.

pain relief was instant but I had to make sure to no overexert the arm to prevent further damage.

I've had steroid injections in both elbows at least twice in each. The injections helped to reduce the pain a lot, but unfortunately the effects didn't last, hence me needing further injections.

I tried to get one but my GP insisted I try a load of exercises first. They did nothing. Luckily I found a Chinese osteopath who did that popping/crunching thing where they manhandle you and click all your joints. Elbow pain totally went and hasn’t come back months later.

RoyKentsChestHair · 05/01/2022 13:52

The reason I specify Chinese is that he was called a Chinese bone setter, but also had lots of Osteo qualifications. Reassuring to see all his certificates on the wall while he’s pulling your head and crunching your spine!

Oh it's so reassuring to hear some positive experiences, even if the pain relief doesn't last. I've tried everything already, acupuncture, physio etc and nothing has had a lasting effect. I just want it to be better.

On the day you have the injection, does it feel better straight away? I've made plans to be able to rest it for at least 24 hours

I have golfers elbow and had 2 lots of injections about 4-5 months apart - relief was the same day and lasted - I had a much smaller dose 4-5 months after the first just before another lockdown (part of me was worried about being locked down and not being able to get injection and the initial one wearing off) - the pain returned very mildly after about 12 months but is so intermittent I have not had any further injections

I was five to drive home - arm felt sore the first day but that was about it

Hope you get some relief soon

I don't recall getting immediate relief, it was around 1-2 days later that the pain relieving effects kicked in.

As with all steroid injections (I've had them elsewhere too) you are required to rest the joint/area for a couple of days.

I really hope the injection gives you some relief.
