At home blood tests

I’m really keen to test my thyroid and hormone levels. I’ve some symptoms, but (understandably) as they’re non-urgent I can’t get a GP appointment until 2024.

I’ve been Googling home test kits over Xmas and there are so many!

Keen to know if anyone can share their experience with one - main queries are:

  • what company
  • easy to understand results
  • what did you test
  • cost
  • if anything was flagged, what next steps did you take, ie did your GP acknowledge the results?

Thanks!

At home thyroid function tests usually need about about 0.5 - 1 ml of blood. So you have to prick your finger with a special lance they send you and drip it into a tiny bottle.

If you don't bleed very easily it can be a bit fiddly.

Some companies that do them are Blue Horizon, Thriva, Medichecks.

If the results come back as outside the normal range - they tell you to contact your GP. Who would then likely want to repeat the test in an NHS lab before starting any treatment.

A colleague at work uses Thriva and really likes it. You do have to squeeze out a fair amount of blood though!

Thanks both for coming back - I've ordered Thriva!

You cannot see a gp for 2 years?

I did Thriva, and getting the blood out was a real challenge.
