Anxious after breast clinic

I had an appointment at the breast clinic last week after discovering a lump in my breast 3 weeks before.

I had a physical examination with the consultant who was confident it didn't feel like a cancerous lump, but I also had a mammogram, ultrasound and fine needle aspiration to cover all bases.

Everyone seemed happy it was nothing to worry about. However the Dr who did the ultrasound and needle biopsy was certain it was a cyst until she put the needle in and then changed her mind to a fibroadonema (sp?).

I suffer with anxiety (particularly around health) and since the appointment I can't help but (over)think that if she was wrong about the cyst, could she be mistaken that it's actually something worse?

I just wondered if anyone has been through similar and it turned out to be cancer? Don't worry about sugar coating anything I'd rather hear real experiences, good or bad. Thank you

I'm pretty sure that they can tell from the mammogram/ultrasound if a lump has suspicious features. As they biopsided it anyway the results will tell you 100% what it was. When do get the results?

I do sympathise as I have health anxiety too and know how easy it is for your mind to over think every little thing.

Thank you for replying.

The Dr said that it will be at least a week, but probably longer because of the bank holiday. She also said they may call me back for another biopsy to get a larger sample. She did say not to worry if that's the case and she seemed pretty certain at the time that it was nothing to worry about. My brain is just doing it's normal thing of 'But what if....?'

I think focus on the fact that they covered all bases

I recently had to have the same (mammogram, ultrasound) but they didn't do a biopsy which bizarrely made me more worried. I had multiple cysts everywhere and now have to have regular check ups.

Fingers crossed you hear back soon.

@MenoMania thank you and you're right, I'm not very good at focusing on the positives!

Glad all was well in your case.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. They could tell just from breast exam and mamogram. When my consulant did the ultrasound he showed me the pic, it was very clear what it was, even to someone non medical like me. Lump had lots of little spikey bits coming off it( like a sprouting potato)and was all different colours. Remember they do thousands of these tests a week and know what they are looking at. They havent said it might be cancer, theyve said its another harmless thing, but are making 100 percent sure which is standard protocol. Try to relax, it all sounds good :)

Thank you @Redannie118 that's reassuring. I saw the picture of my lump from the ultrasound and it didn't look like that.

Hope all is well with you now.

I have been to the breast clinic twice. The first was a fibroadenoma which they told me on the day after doing a needle biopsy but they followed it up with a core biopsy to be sure. My second visit was last year and this time it was cancer but again I was told on the day that they were pretty certain it was cancer but I did then have to wait for the biopsy results to confirm. They see so many different lumps and bumps I truely believe they know what they are looking at.

Coffeeismyhero · 05/01/2022 19:33

Thank you @steppingcarefully your first visit sounds very similar to mine as they have also said I may need to go back for a core biopsy to be sure. I'm just kicking myself that I didn't ask if it was possible to do it all at the same time! I think I felt confident in what I was being told at the time but my brain has gone into overdrive since!

I'm sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis. I hope everything is going well for you.
